0895 Posted January 25 Share Posted January 25 Guess it’s time for a new thread. I’ve been sitting on this one for awhile, waiting to open it in the winter and the timing never worked out. The story is that this store picked two different barrels a few years back. #1 was light and easy drinking summertime bourbon. #2 Was a heavier hitting wintertime bourbon. My memory was triggered by finishing the 1924 off earlier and realizing that I could win bourbon tetris tonight on my opens shelf by filling the empty spot with the same size bottle. Delicious caramel bomb. it’s a little disappointing that lower proof OF barrel picks are so hard to find now. After finishing off a number of bottles recently, I have a few spots to fill on my open shelf. I have a couple of ps OF SB’s. Both from the same store. One is the 90 proof. It’s very good. Back in 2020 I bought about a case of them over two or three months. I still have one left. Back in 2022 or 2023 the store did a ps OF SB BP. I didn’t write the proof down, but I seem to remember it was in the lower 130’s proof. It was pretty tasty, but drank fairly “hot”. I don’t often add water to my bourbon, usually a few small pieces of ice. With this one I had to add water and ice. Just recently, the store did another OF SB BP pick. It’s 128.9 proof. I wonder which one I should open? Maybe the BP? If it’s too hot……… well I could open the 90 proofer and try and work my blending magic. Seems to drink a bit hot for 118.2p. It’s good, but while lacking a bit in complexity, it is fairly well balanced. Lots of caramel and vanilla. aquavite Posted January 26 Share Posted January 26 (edited) For me, Bombay Sapphire. No it's not bourbon but I wanted to check it out as well as my old "Gilbey's Gin" as well. I was out again tonight doing a bit more local shopping. Did not find an ECBP B524. That said, I did find another store that had A124 but for like $35.00 more than I paid for it at the first store. So, as a consolation to the big main store (Total Wine) I went ahead with the Bombay Sapphire and Gilbey's. This store did have EC Single barrel at 135 PF. A little too rich for my blood. But both the Bombay Sapphire and Glbey's were very good for Gin. Bombay Sapphire a bit stronger, but still a good juniper taste. Anyway, the search continues for a B524. This is a handle that has the 12 year as statement on the back label. The first thing I noticed is the darker hue from the current ECSB you can find available. Either way, very happy that I have 4 additional handles left after I finish this one. Maybe we are going to start seeing more age statements appearing on labels once again. I guess time will tell. It has always been my go to, daily pour. I accumulated a lot of these while we were living in NC years ago. The ABC board store I was friendly with usually had either the 750ml or the 1.75 on sale alternating months. So when the handles were on sale, I would grab one during my weekly truck check in. Forgot I still had this many in the box from when we moved. The cork part is still very firmly stuck in the bottle. I'll have to get the vice grips out of the garage, then look for the right size cork to replace. First sip was excellent! I must admit, when I buy MM, it's usually the 101. The only Private Selects I've sampled were from 2 stores near me, and while good, didn't persuade me to pick up a bottle. This is much better than both of those.
