IamMatt
Going to visit a friend in Honolulu in a few weeks, Any distilleries worth touring/visiting on Oahu? Thanks.
Richnimrod
Sadly I cannot recall the name or the company; but, I tasted a unique locally made pineapple wine while in the islands about 25-years ago. Perhaps it's still being made, and maybe by asking about it you'll have a chance to taste it. I liked it, FWTW.
flahute
There are some rum distilleries there but I don't know anything about them.
Richnimrod
Ooooh, Rum! I forgot to mention a truly dark rum I picked up on Maui; again, many, many years ago. It was called simply; "Maui Dark Rum". It was like drinking thinned out molasses. Interesting, for sure; but, not too sure how it may be used other something boring like Rum & Coke, or whatnot. It was so unique; but, I imagine it would overpower most 'tropical drinks'. I just sipped it over ice. It was made (I think) by Haleakala Distillers, I believe on Maui. IamMatt
So, I just got back from Oahu (Honolulu). The main whiskey distillery on the island (Ko'olau) turns out to use only 5% young local juice and 95% KY-sourced juice so we passed and went to the Ko Hana rum distillery instead. Hated the white rums, the older dark rums were better, especially the barrel proof. Like other aged dark rums I have tried it had some bourbon-y notes, which makes sense since they age it it ex-bourbon barrels. I saw at least 8 or 10 bourbon names on the barrels in their rickhouse. There are a couple other whiskey distilleries on the island so if we go back to Oahu we may check them out.
smokinjoe
Sorry late responding here, but I did pick up a Hawaiian gin several months ago at a store here in Atlanta. FY, distilled in Maui it seems.
