What Bourbon Are You Drinking Spring 2025?

Had a Blanton's Red yesterday. It is really growing on me. Is it me or is there more oak? Word is they are 2 years older than regular Blanton's. In related news, the Old Charter Oak is growing on me as well. Hmmmm.

Had a generous pour of Weller Special Reserve from a 'family sized jug' that had been on a shelf in the bunker for quite a long while.   I admit, I rarely have poured WSR over the last several years.   I'll also admit, I have no idea why not.    I guess other "more dynamic" pours have supplanted this previously mundane wheater, and it became a space-hog that had to be relegated to the bunker.   

That is a mistake I shall endeavor to rectify.   This is a fine Bourbon, with a very satisfying nose and more than adequate palate, followed by a decent finish.   It's a relatively low-proof, yet very lovely Bourbon, allowing generous pours, and follow-up drams, if desired.    Why the hell have I not been pouring and enjoying this stuph?!?!?

I long for the days when this brand was on every shelf for around 13-15 bux a fifth.     

Of course with the wheater-craze of the last several years, along with the insanity for 'all things Buffalo Trace', it's now borderline-unobtanium around The Mitten State.   Sad!

I'm glad I have more than half of that family sized jug now in the rotation.

This one is a hidden gem. Could see my bunker running out of space with this one.

Some SA Tanager after seeing all of the family away to their travels home.  
I do enjoy an excellent bourbon enhanced by a quiet house.

I hope everyone had a great Easter. Mine was done with my eldest Son & Wife, wings, spaghetti squash, taters, doctored up Bush's beans, garlic bread & this trio. After a "bourbon free" Lent, this threesome was perfect...

Quickie review on the OGD16...

Nose = Excellent - Straight Up 'very bright' Caramel Apple

Taste = Continued with a wonderful Caramel Apple followed by pretty big Oak 

 

Not very complex but the caramel apple followed by the oak was nice and dare I say, smooth.

Not much finish but I'm glad I got this out of my system. I will not replace it, mostly because of cost, but can see myself reaching for this on occasion & enjoying...

P.S. Bulliet BiB in the glass now. Pretty sure this is my favorite Bulliet to date...

How does that compare to the cask strength? I've been trying to find a bottle, but I haven't found one yet.

It is a completely different profile.  The process adds a layered profile.  I enjoy their regular and their CS but it is elevated and deeper like a WSR to a WLW.

We opened the SA Tanager last night.  Since it was a fresh opening, we gave it about 15 minutes in the glencarin before starting to open up.    Again , the packaging and details on this bottle is spectacular!  The Still Austin team did an amazing job on every aspect of this offering.

Nose:  Orange peel, strawberries, raspberries, peanut brittle ( homemade  kind),  coconut and egg nog

Palate:  caramel,  brown sugar, cinnamon, tea, cocoa and ripe strawberries

Finish:  Salted caramel, fruit tarts, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

 

This is a very special bottle,, it will be dolled out very sparingly.  It has a depth and complexity that is very rare.  I am very happy to have three bottles.  I may even try to add to that count.    My two friends said it was the most amazing bourbon they had ever had.  It will be interesting to see if it opens up any with time.

 

Nancy and the distilling team outdid themselves with this.  The level of expertise is breathtaking.  It easily is in the top five bourbons I have ever had in 50 years of enjoying this hobby.

 

If you have the opportunity to acquire a bottle (or more), do so.  You will not regret your decision.

Won this at a raffle for MSRP today.  Very solid pour, but I can't say I'd buy another at this price, especially when it's fairly easy to find a barrel strength store pick for less.

Yeah but those barrel strength store picks are only 4 year old whiskey, 5 years tops.  That one is 10 years age stated.  So which is the better value?  🧐

I felt the same with the one I bought last year.   I enjoyed it, but not as much as I enjoy the OF Barrel Strength store picks.   The 1924 mash bill (79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley)  is also different from your standard OF mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley and I get none of the notes I usually get in the OF offerings.

Yeah, the 1924 is the Early Times mash bill.  That used to be sourced for Michters and Cream Of KY too.  I guess they age ET enough, then it's $$$.

I usually think in those same terms, especially with my penchant for being such a cheap bastard, but if I like what's in the bottle I don't care how old it is....

Yep I agree with this.  It's just when assessing value of a whiskey at retail prices, to me the age of the liquid comes before the the proof level.  That's the only point I was trying to make (clumsily I admit).

I think the Tanager is a blend of the bourbons from their Bottled in Bond seasonal collection (red corn, blue corn and white corn).  I mean if one can't find Tanager (I didn't) I suppose a "poor man's" version could be blended at home using those three BiB bottles.  I emptied my only white corn Bib (the one called "High Rye") and now I wish I'd kept a few ounces for a home blend.
