Out east. Hampton Bays.

I looked at a store in West Hampton. Would have been crazy, but I did like the store a lot. One heck of a drive from out here though.

I left the country for the week to take my boys to some baseball games in California. Stopped at a Total Wine tonight. Nice to see a liquor store open on a Sunday where they’re closed in Texas. Nice to see EH Taylor, Eagle Rare, Heaven Hill Grain to Glass, all varieties right there for the taking. They also had the Woodford Reserve Baccarat edition there. That said, most prices were about $5-$10 more than what I see back in Texas. Oddly, they do not do sampling of hard liquor there. Evidently they are not permitted to do so. Wow.

I opened an airline bottle of the Old Emmer Double Oaked. Very nice. At $100 for a 750ml, it’s a bit expensive, but the juice is nice. Worth sampling if you can

The other day, I pulled down a 'special' bottle from the top shelf, as a soothing salve for my disappointment in the state of our national political discourse.

(As good a reason as any, right?)   (Though, I'm aware this complaint ain't nothun new, eh?)

But, I digress....

I had a generous pour from a now-below-half-full bottle of William Larue Weller from 2013 (I think), 136.2-proof.    My Goodness!   What a lovely dram this is!   I barely remembered how wonderful it was until I got my nose above the rim of my Glencairn.   Then I recalled why it was placed on that exalted shelf.     This is something like "Bourbon Syrup" would be to Bourbon the way coke syrup is to Coca Cola.    Just so intense!   Yet entirely drinkable in tiny sips... interrupted by frequent nosing, as that part is nearly as enjoyable as the tasting.    Nirvana in a tasting glass!

I need to decant this gal into something with less 'air-in-there'.

This is the first RR SIB pick I've bought in probably 3 or so years. While it isn't up there with the CNF 6th floor picks from 2019 and 2020, it's better than the few barrels I had around '21-'22. I forget which warehouses those picks came from.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Jimmy would find more Honey Barrels that were laid down in Dec than any other time. I hope you've stumbled across something special with this early Dec bottle. I've had some very good CN pours but my all time favs have always been Tyrone (especially 4th fl B). Hoping you enjoy this bottle a lot!

For a Tyrone, it’s pretty good.

Holladay Soft Read Wheat BiB, oh my , where  has this been. Exceptional...

Holladay bourbon is pretty new! They are great people. Historic distillery that stopped making bourbon a long time ago and then recently decided to start back up.

I believe the first of the new bourbon hit the market in 2023 and widening distribution has been a gradual process.

It's been a very long week here in the flahute household. We are doing a major basement remodel and this week we had the electricians here for full electrical and panel replacement.

As per the usual with remodels you find all kinds of surprises. Such as not being prepared for them to need to trench the drywall upstairs because that was the only way to get a new wire to a particular outlet. The old wire was going straight through the return air plenum and needed to be removed. They started Monday and last photo is late this morning after they left.

Acting as my own GC while also being the architect meant is was an exhausting week of problem solving and question answering.

I do believe I have earned a big pour of George T Stagg.

Looking good. And those surprises usually come with additional invoices. I just got out of a 92 day boondoggle. Good luck!

The intention was to remodel the outside 360 degrees. We brought in a landscape designer and hardscape guy. The main purpose was fire abatement, plant drought tolerant plants, remodel the backyard, and better drain system for the heavy rains we get in the hills. The people we decided to work with were recommended by close friends. They ended up having a war on our property that I was having to referee weekly. In addition, we took out 94 feet of mature plants that provided privacy for us and our neighbor. We put up a green screen while the work was being done but they got mad we took out our plants. On day 70ish we had to bring a fence guy in to build a 94 foot fence to keep the peace. Lawyers got involved. We were able to offset that cost a little by mostly only using 1g and 5g plants instead of 15g plants because the new fence provides privacy.
We also built a new wall on the other side of the house and I was planning on building a decorative fence on top of the wall to  provide privacy. The city came in and stopped us because the fence would bring it out of code. Still in limbo there. I would leave town and things we agreed upon would change. We have more work to complete but I had enough and sent everyone home. There were other oversights that cost us money.

Sounds like a new thread catagory. What the F&%_ was I thinking when I got myself into this remodel?

Thank goodness for the end results....and still being married. :)
