How did I get so hooked?

I haven't been a member here for long, but as a lover of bourbon, I pop back to this forum many times a day.

I posted not so long ago that I would just have one bottle of a new bourbon that I had never have before and once that had gone, buy another.

Now I have a WT 8YO, a BT (2nd bottle) ORVW and a bottle of Eagle Rare on order, all with different amounts in each.

I know its nowhere near where some of you guys are on your collection, I am still confused on how I ended up with 4 bottles, when i was so adament I was only going to have one at a time!

On second thought never mind, I'm happy (think I might order another) this stuff is addictive!! tongue.gif

Just wait Empire. Before you know it, those 4 will be 8, then 16... crazy.gif

Anyway, just have fun with it. There's many of us that started out just like you! toast.gif

Agreed. When I found this site I had 1 bottle of Maker's Mark, 1 Bottle of Woodford Reserve and 1 bottle of Wild Turkey 80. Within 1 month my collection had quadrupled, much to the displeasure of SWMBO. Now I have bourbon in places a person probably shouldn't skep.giflol.gif It's a fun hobbie, but can easily get out of hand crazy.gif

Funny this tread shows up today. A co-worker just got back fom a trip to another state and returned with seven bottles of various bourbons for me. (Elmer T Lee, Weller Antique, Pappy Rye, WT Liqueur [wife's favorite], etc)

Amazing how these things grow. Must have some rabbit in them.

Keep buying smile.gif thewhiskyechange.com has great deals on WT 12YO and Rock Hills Farm - I have some WT 12 on order smile.gif... only 7 bottles left they tell me. You can always save it until Xmas wink.gif

My latest was Blanton's silver edition (has gate crashed my top 5) - I will post tasting notes when I work it out.

You know your hooked when:

1. You ask your insurance agent about getting a rider on your homeowner's insurance to cover your bourbon. (BTW, my agent non-chalantly referred me to an appraiser, required a fire marshall's visit and NFPA posting and added it. Only in Kentucky. Anywhere else, they would have cancelled my policy)

Reminds me of the famous (albeit apocryphal) story about the guy who insured his valuable cigar collection then made a claim for their loss by fire...after he had smoked them.

I can also vouch for The Whisky Exchange. They´ve helped me out with many a hard-to-find bourbon (especially the Japan-only ones). A friendly and helpful staff and they ship to the US to boot but, as pointed out in an earlier topic, the shipping costs to your side of the pond is far from negligible.

I find it ironic, though, that while many exclusive bottlings have found their way to my collection, I have been totally unable to track down a bottle of Very Old Barton. I´ve been hunting for something like 4 years now and still no success. frown.gif

Also, if any one knows about a store who stocks Old Forester BB and ships to Sweden, I would be extremely grateful. I have lost count on all the US online stores where I have enquired only to get a polite no (or in some cases no reply at all).

Ed,

You really had to have a firemarshall visit?

I know you didn't need an appraisal as you know the value of your collection.

Dave,

My valuation and the "actuarial value" (Is that the right term?) differed significantly, but I'm still much better off than what you get based on a standard policy. (Read as "next to nothing") The fire marshall thing came up because I asked. I wanted to be sure that they weren't going to refuse to pay if my house burned down.

My wife wants to know why I suddenly have to have "another" bottle of bourbon and my father-in-law wants to know why I don't want rocks any more. I must be coming down with something..... wink.gif

You know your hooked when even your wife dreams of coming home to find whole walls replaced with cabinets full of bourbon & a fire extinguisher sitting next to the breakfast table.

Mmmmm whole cabinets full of bourbon! Nice thought, I will have to keep buying. BTW, my Eagle Rare turned up yesterday and although I only had a small sip I was very impressed, but will leave the big sip wink.gif till the weekend.

You know the funny thing is I thought my wife would complain about why I started collecting these bottles, but even she gets excited when I get a new bottle of something, especially when it's something that you can't buy in the UK stores (doesn't seem so fun when she is happy with it) wink.gif

Whisky exchange looks good, thanks Bamber, I will get my next bottle from there.
