Sure, I'll pour a glass if I'm home at night and my girl's away. I don't think anything of it.

Now, getting drunk alone -- that's when you may have a problem worth thinking about.

I know you said "Anonymous...", but that would be too much like drinking alone. grin.gif

Actually, I checked the "I drink alone" choice because it's true more often than not (unless my dogs count as company, which they do, for me).

Back in the day when I sometimes drank to excess in public, I engaged in numerous annoying behaviors, such as quoting literary passages from various sources ranging from Lewis Carroll ("'Twas brillig and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimbal in the wabe...") to Ayn Rand ("Thousands of years ago, the first man discovered how to make fire. He was probably burned at the stake he had taught his brothers to light...") If my recitations had proven to be more entertaining to my comrades, then perhaps I would still seek out company when I drink. grin.gif

Dave Morefield

There should have been a fourth choice, I usually drink alone. Most of the time when I'm enjoying a pour I'm at my PC reading posts here or surfing. The occasional Thursday night chat also counts. But I do drink with friends and family from time to time so always is too strong.

I do like to drink on dates provided my date does too. The more she drinks the better I look. And vice versa unfortunately.

I drink alone, but not to excess. With an 11-month old that's still nursing, my wife hasn't really been much of a drinking buddy for the last couple years. lol.gif

While I marked the "I drink alone" choice because it is accurate, the accompanying "(I prefer to be by myself)" isn't. Alas, some of us have little choice. I live alone, and am seldom in the company of bourbon drinkers. It's one of the many reasons to enjoy the Sampler and Festival as often as possible -- to be able to enjoy, compare and exchange with others who appreciate fine bourbon.

I marked I drink alone sometimes. But, if you said "do I drink bourbon alone" then I'd have to vote most times. Unfortunately most of my family & friends are scotch, wine or beer drinkers...

The "I prefer to be by myself" qualifier was supposed to be heard by the reader in George Thorogood's voice. It was an attempt at humor.

I like to go drink when im out with friends but i also just like relaxing after a fulfilling day and capping it off with an ounce and a half pour of the good stuff and just read random things online.

Sounds like we all know how to relax after a hard day's work. Being with friends is important even if only posting on this site.

"All mimsy were the borogoves and the mome raths outgrabe"

If I stop drinking in public to excess, will I stop doing this as well?

"Out, Out Damned spot"

"life is but a poor player"

"this one has little car, this one has a little star, oh how many fish there are" crazy.gif

I dare say you have some company here, friend.

In the UK everyone goes out at the weekend and gets smashed out of thier head (which is something I did for most of my late teens and twenties) but I've grown up, got married and settled down, so I now enjoy nothing more than sitting in on the weekend and sipping a couple of glasses of my collection. However when I mention this to friends they look at me as though I have some sort of problem for drinking at home, I find it strange that some people think it's ok to drink to excess, so long as one can use the excuse that you were out with friends, but give strange looks to you for having a few tipples at home. maybe it's just an English thing?!

Unfortunately, I don't think this is just an English thing. At least where I live, a lot folks will consider you an alcoholic if you have 1-2 drinks per day by yourself. I don't let that stop me, though.

Nope. I've noticed hints of that sentiment here at the Morefield house and even in this discussion group, of all places.

Hmmmm, I wonder if learning all those fancy poems and prose would make the conversations I have with my after-drinking-buddy Mr. Porcelainbowl any more enlightening? He never complains about my lack of proper English, but then he is a quiet fellow that is a good listener. crazy.gif

Which is, of course, complete garbage. 1-3 drinks a day is good for you. Ask Google, and look for pages that deal with empirical data.

I tend to prefer drinking with friends, but I make a point of having 2-3 drinks daily and will happily consume them alone if need be. (Hell, right now my mini-snifter of WT Rye is keeping me company as I sift through a stack of journal articles. You'd think a tipple would impede scholarly reading, but I think it actually helps me pay attention.)
