OGD 114

Well, there's a special-ordered bottle of OGD 114 headed to a liquor store near me on Thursday. Since I like Basil Hayden's but found it too weak, I figured I'd take the plunge on a bottle of the 114. I've also noticed that it appears pretty frequently on people's top 5 or top 10 lists.

So - how do folks like to drink the OGD 114? I typically drink everything neat, but I've never had 114 proof bourbon before. I'm wondering if it would be better to cut it with water or drink it on the rocks?

Rocks + dash water, or in a Manhattan also with dash of water or soda to lighten. Another way: tall in a glass with cold spring water. OGD is very good, and (as discussed before) it appears 114 proof, or 57% abv, is a hearkening back to the old British proof standard, since 57% abv was 100 British proof (Sykes system).

Me too, as for this bourbon 114 just seems the right proof. It wouldn't be an everyday pour straight but there are times when it's absolutely perfect. Like last week when I finished hanging my outdoor Christmas lights, my eyes gravitated directly to it. I poured a couple of fingers and then stood out front until the timer kicked them on for the first time. My hands were freezing but my belly wasn't.

Oh, yes. I use my OGD 114 for special occasion, slow sipping, only. It is perfect when sitting in my comfortable chair reading a book after everyone else has gone to bed. Also, only one pour at a time. Don't load up on this one!

Ok... just picked up the bottle. Why is the packaging for this so much better than the OGD BIB and 86 proof versions? It is 10x classier and eye-catching, and the price is only $4 more than the BIB.

Anyway. The lot # for my bottle is "1". Does this mean that I have a bottle from the very first batch of OGD 114 made by Beam (it is made at Beam now, right?). Is this something I should worry about, or not? I'm not opening the bottle until I get together with a buddy who is a rye-heavy bourbon freak on New Year's Eve, so I'll give my impressions then.

I like to consider OGD 114 a great flask bourbon. Like when it is colder than a cast iron commode on the shady side of an ice berg. Most tasty after a cold day of hunting or when at a Steelers 14-1 playoff game in sub zero weather and I can see my feet but not feel them.

I've been meaning to ask for recommendations for a good backpacking bourbon. I know someone likes the 114 for weight to punch ratio, and now I can guess you'd be in favor of it, too. I'll really have to give this a try; I do enjoy the BIB. And on the original question, I'd start it neat and see if a little water was wanted.

I really like this stuff. the top of the bottle seems larger than most others,so the stuff comes gushing out. it packs a punch, but is very drinkable neat. I like it from a snifter.great in the evening

I can drink it neat just fine, except that my next breath (even when I don't have a cold, I tend to breathe through my mouth) tends to be overwhelmed by the alcohol remaining in my mouth, and I choke (does that make me a girly man?)

I've found that keeping a glass of water or ginger ale with me, and taking a small sip after sipping the bourbon tends to prevent this, and it sometimes opens up some additional flavor as well.

I guess this is what folks refer to when ordering a "water back". Maybe I'll go back and try it with some of my other bourbons.

My flask bourbon & my designated 'watch the sunset' bourbon as well. I'm a big believer in hi-proof bourbon carried in the flask. 114 proof x 4 oz = 456, or roughly 6 oz of 80 proof bourbon. If you're carrying it in a backpack over hill and dale you start appreciating this sort of statistic.

Brought a flask of OGD 114 to the in-laws' house this past weekend. In my limited experience, this is indeed the ultimate flask bourbon - high enough in proof that a little bit goes a long way, lots of flavor so you don't miss the nose as much, and it goes down smoothly in case you have to take a quick nip away from prying eyes without coughing and giving yourself away.

I just opened my first bottle of OGD114. Very impressive, I must say.

My tasting notes say, "An unusually smoky bourbon at first nose & sip, but with a sweet finish full of strawberries and other fruit. Delicious."

I don't know how long this expression has been available but I have kept one on hand for a good many years now. I favor it for all of the reasons mentioned above and find it one of the few that drinks well straight or mixed under most any circumstance.

Well since JB is my least liked American distillery I did bay this bottle only due to all the good things I have read about it on the forum. I have just got it home and not tasted it jet but it is a couple of things that puzzles me. It says distilled and bottled in Frankfurt on the back label. It seems like a modern bottle and label so I assume it is a JB. So what I wonder is: How can they print this on the label if it’s not true? Or could it be real OGD or old OGD stock bottled by JB? The bar code on the bottle is 80686 40940 and 86259 25574 on the black box and it is a long text on the neck label that say among things bottled straight from the barrel And one more thing. Is there any list on bar codes somewhere on this forum? I would be glad for advice or viewpoints.

Thank you very much Dave! This will be helpful not only in this case but a whole lot I guess. It’s a JB bottling all right but I am still puzzled by the distilled and bottled in Frankfurt part. Is there anyone that can confirm that it’s the normal text on this brand?

I have an empty bottle that is probably the same as yours. Says Lot No. 1 on the back, and "Distilled and Bottled By the Old Grand-Dad Distillery Company Frankfort*Clermont, KY" with a bullet point looking symbol where I placed the asterisk.

It was purchased in Lexington, KY in the summer of 2004.

I am also just to the fact that it say Frankfurt Clermont on JB bottles but it don’t say that on this one. It only says Frankfurt.

well, that's perhaps a good sign that you have something unique on your hands. Current label on the back of OGD BIB says that is distilled in Clermont, DSP-KY-230, and bottled in Frankfort, DSP-KY-14.

This is easily my favorite bourbon. It tastes great, packs a decent wallop, and is quite inexpensive. I drink it straight, too, although at first I had to follow it with a chaser.

The only downside is the bad reputation it has among non-bourbon drinkers. They always look at me like I'm insane when I order it (on the rare occasions I go to a bar that carries it).

I think it has a pretty good reputation on these boards. I know its one of my favorites.

There is broad support on this board for all the less expensive higher proof pours. That is how I found out about them!

I was able to pick up a couple bottles today. It seems like a real hit or miss in WA. and only a couple of the Liquor Stores in the entire State carry it for some reason. It was one of the bottles you listed in your top 10 Tim (ratcheer), thats the first I had ever heard of it. I think it has great flavor.
