I'm new and thought I'd say hello.

I've been a bourbon fan for quite a while, but all I really knew was Jim Beam (usually Black). Recently I've decided to slowly (darn budget) taste my way through the bourbon selection at the local liquor store. The selection is quite good here in No. VA.

Also, thought I'd point ths out, I think it's a good deal and everyone around here seems to like it

They list it as 129 proof. Either they still have lat fall's offering, or they have the Spring '05 release, and didn't bother to update the description. I'm guessing its the latter.

I ordered a bottle expecting the spring 05. When I get it I will update this thread with the result. Of course either way, you can't go wrong with Stagg.

I emailed them, but they won't/can't ship to Japan. I have also been coresponding with Binny's in Chigago. I hope that they can ship here and that it is not too expensive. If all else fails I will have it shipped to my folks and try to bring it backin my checked luggage. I know they won't let it on the plane in carry on. If that won't work I will drink it while I am home. Should take three to five years to finish it that way...

Not sure about the international portion of your flight(s), but the only Stagg you can't carry on domestically (as long as it's sealed) is the 2003 which at 142+ proof is considered hazardous material (anything over 140). Other than that, you're allowed 5 liters in carryon.

Yes it will have the year on the bottle as well as the proof which is a give away for the year as well as no two years proofs have been the same. By the way, mhn, I forgot to say welcome!

I'm thinking this should be 2005 because they didn't have the 2004 listed the last time I placed an order there (for a bottle of WT Tribute).

Actually, Dane, while Stagg's companions -- Eagle Rare 17yo and Sazerac rye -- do have 'Distilled:" and "Bottled:" dates, the Stagg itself does not. Stagg states just the proof (hand-written in both proof and abv) which, as Dane says, has been different with each bottling (and different within the bottlings this spring). The ER17 and Saz don't need the proof designator because its printed on the (rear) labels themselves, and doesn't vary from year to year.

The only Stagg you'll find with a reference to its year is one of the 2002s that has the "2002 American Whiskey of the Year" sticker on it.

I just received 3 bottles today and it's proof is listed as 131.8 on all three.

I also noticed on the 2005 bottle that I recently picked up, that there is no age statement, but the printed store receipt says it's a 15yo. Do they know something I don't, or is it just a guess (or the age of a previous bottling)?

The Spring Stagg was distilled in the Spring of 1988 and bottled in the Spring of 2005. The info sheet that comes with a 3-pack also lists the actual age as 16yrs and 8 mos.

We have deliberately chosen different floors of different warehouses to give you guys an idea of what happens when you take the same recipe and let the microclimate of a particular floor take over. We never rotate our barrels because we want the different flavor profiles. Since we usually pick whiskey around 15 years old, it is interesting to note the proof can range from 129 - 143+. Just as the proof varies, so does the taste.
