I'm flying into Washington, DC on July 2 for a wedding on July 3. I was hoping to pick up some bourbons that aren't available up here; is there anyone here who can recommend a good store in that area?

Thanks,

Will

Montgomery County Liquor Store

6831 Wisconsin Avenue

Bethesda, MD

This is just over the D.C. line. Not the best selection of the other county stores, but this one is close to D.C.

The Wine Specialist

2115 M St. NW

Washington DC

Fairly good selection, often has speciality bottles (Stagg, Tribute, etc.), higher prices than Mont. Co.

Schneiders of Capitol Hill

300 Mass. Ave, N.W.

Washington, DC

Very good selection but rarely gets special bottlings. Prices just a tad lower than Wine Specialist.

There are other good places (such as farther out in MD and in VA) but the above are in or very close to DC.

I'm planning a trip up to Montgomery County soon. Which store has the best selection in your opinion?

15604 Columbia Pike

Burtonsville, MD 20866

If you can make it up to Carrol County, try

Cranberry Liquors

405 North Center Street

Westminster, MD

If you make it out to Anne Arundel county, try:

Edgewater Liquors

58 W. Central Ave.

Edgewater, MD

or

Bay Ridge Wine and Spirits

111 Hillsmere Dr

Annapolis, MD

Mont. Co County liquor stores and Edgewater have the lowest prices I've ever seen in the VA, DC MD area.

Gotta throw in a plug for the Burtonsville MonCo store. Some rarities, including VOB and Stagg (two bottles left as of yesterday), and very good prices (OGD 114 was $20, etc).

How about the other places in Maryland? Any near Elkton? Route 40? I see a lot of stores around there but wonder about the selection. Can you offer any help? thankyousign.gif

There is a bar called simply "Bourbon" at 2348 Wisconsin Ave. in Washington itself which claims to have for tasting "every bourbon that's available in Washington, D.C.".

Pappy 23 is $90 a pour, though, and they list a Pappy 30yo -- for $150 a pour. Stagg is $95 and Hirsch 20 is $70. Go figure.

But, Evan Williams black is $5, as is 4yo Early Times bourbon.

Attached is the drink menu (PDF format), which lists the whiskeys by distillery, a nice idea.

I noticed on their bourbon menu that they have the Old Grand Dad 114 identified as "barrel proof", which was recently discussed under a GTS thread (some even had pictures of bottles to support the claim). The newer ones, of course, don't state that. Either they have the real thing, or are mis-stating what they've got to offer.

Anybody know anything about this Pappy 30? I thought the 23yo was the patriarch of the family!? confused.gif

Gosh, at $95 a pour, what's the bar-value of BobbyC's bunker!? lol.gif

Well, I'm sure Julian can settle the matter -- but, in the meantime, I've emailed the bar in an attempt to procure info and, hopefully, a picture.

He plays 'em close to the chest! As if we could have grovelled more, could you imagine the response a reference to a 30 year Pappy would have brought at the gazebo? lol.gif

No such thing as 30-year VW bourbon. Must be a missprint.

The Montgomery Co. store in Burtonsville has the largest selection in the Montgomery co. The manager, George Shelley is very knowledgeable and will special order anything he can from the distribution network. The entire Mont. Co. network received 8 cases of G.T. Stagg. The Burtonsville store, because of George’s persistence, received 4 cases. He now only has 2 bottles left. This is a picture of George. Ask for him when you go.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions! The Wine Specialist turned out to be right across the street from my hotel, and I picked up a bottle of Van Winkle Lot B and Black Maple Hill 11yr old (no idea if this will be good or not, but I figured "What the hell?"). I hope to crack into the Van Blankle tonight!

A note: when we refer to "Van Blankle", we're not talking about just any Lot B, but rather Randy Blank's (doubleblank) single-barrel version of it, selected last summer. The only place to get that is directly from him. Hope to see you at the Festival! grin.giftoast.gif

Ah, gotcha... in that case, it won't be Van Blanke, but hopefully it will still be good...

Cheers!

I don't know about the prices, but that is a damm fine selection of bourbons yum.gif

Pretty sad when I've worked out that of the 100 whiskeys listed there, Australia has 20 of them available accoss the country and 2 available if you are at 1 of 2 'specialty' stores in Melbourne banghead.gif

Will, You won't be disappointed in the Lot B but for those fortunate few of us, the Van Blankle is Lot B on steroids. bowdown.gif
