TNbourbon
I have a confession to make -- earlier this evening, I poured Stagg (Spring '05) into an equal part diet cola (not even Coke or Pepsi, but Kroger's 'Big K' brand) . I blame Gary Gillman. That, and the fact that I had just been reading, on another forum, about how rum might be the only thing to improve Ardbeg 10yo. It got me to thinking -- a dangerous pastime. Here's the worst part -- I liked it! No, I'm not going to make the rest of my 17 bottles (I wouldn't have done it if I'd had only 1 -- really!) of George T. Stagg into mixers. But, well -- I liked it! Then I added a few drops of Quinta do Vesuvio 1990 vintage port to some 2004 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon (Which was the greater sin? The Vesuvio is a $60-$70 bottle!) I think I created something akin to dark rum. I liked it, too! (I know -- I'm so shallow.) Surely, I can't be the only one: Let's hear it -- what is your worst bourbon sin? (At least it wasn't Pappy 23! )

dgonano
Tim, It sounds like your losing control. My greatest bourbon sin is just too many unopened bottles.I think I know my penance... 3 Hail Mary's and be generous to my fellow board members next month in KY. BourbonJoe
Tim, You not only committed a sin, but a mortal sin. One that you cannot be forgiven unless you undo your wicked mixing practices. Joe

The most I ever do to my bourbon is add a little water and ice (for sitting out on the deck summer afternoons) BUT whatever you enjoy drinking is what you enjoy. I think you show great courage and imagination!! All hail the explorers, inventors and artists amoung us!!! The sin here is mine... envy of those 17 bottles of GTS. I've never even seen one..... Barrel_Proof
Tim, It sounds like you're losing control. Fortunately, many of us can say that we knew the real Tim, long before he suffered that meltdown of sensibility in August '05.
jbutler
Honestly Tim, the only sin I see here is the amount of money you spent on that port. Port's some foul shit man. OK, joking aside, why not make mixed drinks with your best liquor? If you choose to make a mixed drink, why not have the best? I use bourbon as a flavoring agent in the kitchen on a regular basis. I keep a bottle of 2003 Stagg and a bottle of Booker's in the kitchen cabinet, and I wouldn't use lesser (or weaker) bourbons in my food. Keep the bottle of Old Warthog for your guests who wouldnt know the difference; drink the good stuff yourself ... any way you'd like.
squire
The only real sin would be keeping the stuff cooped up in a bottle.Regards,Squire
cowdery
Bingo. Jim hit the answer squarely on the head. No matter what you are doing or making, use the best ingredients you can. Stated that way, the logic seems unassailable.

TNbourbon
Honestly Tim, the only sin I see here is the amount of money you spent on that port... I didn't say I spent that much, Jim! I said it is worth that much -- I bought three of them for about $100 8-10 years ago, so I finally decided recently to enjoy one of them at half-price. Bobby, are those just the '02s? Cliff, who said I EVER had any sensibilities? You folks missed the last part (or are deliberately ignoring it while enjoying the perverse pleasure of needling li'l ol' me) of my post -- what heresy have YOU committed? bobbyc
Bobby, are those just the '02s? At least the front row is. I believe that they all were, I need to slow down on getting rid of them however, I sold one, and gave one away, traded one. I often run out of things to do but I really have no idea how many I have at present, well I have an idea, just not an exact count.

ratcheer
It is documented somewhere on this site that I once mixed Wild Turkey Kentucky Spitit with something (I think it was a small amount of cognac). I do remember that the result was damned good.Tim

gr8erdane
My greatest bourbon sin was not to double check my tailgate last year on the way to Bourbon Fest. Allowing that cooler with its S/W contents to escape into the cold cruel world unguarded and unprotected was definitely a sin.And then (yes Dawn) there's Dr. Bourbonstein..... MurphyDawg
Two greatest bourbon sins: the occasional mixing of good bourbon with Sprite to make a concoction not unlike a really good ginger ale. And secondly giving three of my best bottles of bourbon away to someone who would not appreciate them in a haste when moving. . Ah well, live and learn.TomC
pepcycle
One evening I Poured about 5 fingers of AAA 10. It was one of those nights when it just wouldn't go down right. I sipped and tried. No use. I walked back to the bar and carefully redeposited the remaining 4 fingers into my Gold Medallion Rock Hill Farms. Now, If I were Gillman, there might be a revelation in this story, but I'm a devout anti-vatter. At that moment, I realized how Van Gogh could cut off his own ear. CrispyCritter
Even though I haven't really been a cocktail drinker since I got into whiskey, I'd still think that "better booze makes better cocktails" would be a good rule of thumb.Drifting off-topic a bit, I remember once ordering a generic gin and tonic, and then having a Tanqueray and tonic. I could definitely taste the difference - the T&T was light-years better. That being said, I'm sure there are better gins than Tanqueray around, as well, but I'm firmly in the "whiskey, neat" camp now.
Chaz7
Have you ever given a bottle of really good bourbon (or scotch for that matter) to client or a friend only to have it re-gifted to their just turned 21 son for his party? It ends up in the "punch",on the floor, mixed with who knows, and finally it's "returned" on their living room carpet by "Tommy Twenty Shot". Now that's a sin! I wound up liking Tanqueray 10 best of the 4-5 I've tried. Clean with a nice flavor. Has anyone tried Anchor's Junipero??? It sounds pretty good!Cheers,Ken
