The Blanton's Silver Edition hoax

Another thread finally made me decide to post this because I thought there were only a few dummies that have been had by this.

Does anyone think it was 1st wrong for Buffalo Trace to let LB put regular Blanton's in the Silver Edition boxes and 2nd wrong for LB to blatantly mislead its buyers into thinking their buying the Silver Edition?

I was one of those that bought it thinking I had bought silver edition, then I got home and it wasn’t. Should it be up to the buyer to open up the box and look to see if what they are buying is what the packaging says it is? I have heard of several other people being fooled by this. I personally think its false advertisement and a bunch of BS.

Ken W. how exactly do you all explain my two points as being a good business practice? Would it be right for me to go buy a 12 pack of Coke and when I get home and open the box there is all cans of Sprite in it? And the reasoning behind it was Kroger thought the Coke boxes looked better/Coke was out of Sprite boxes; and then Coke for some reason thought it would be okay to let Kroger do it. It’s the exact same thing, and obviously it was not a mistake, because I have heard you basically say that they asked and you all obliged. I’m a big BT fan, but this one has always bugged me.

I'm I the only one thats miffed by this? To me, Buffalo Trace should make LB pull all the Silver Edition boxes of the shelf. It wasn't that big of a hassel for me to take it back, but what if I had bought that bottle and lived in Pikeville? It wouldn't be too easy to take it back. Maybe I'm being picky, but this is a horrible way to do business.

Well, it did happen to me but I simply forgot a previous post I'd read about it so I figure it's my own fault in that sense. Plus at the price I paid at the time I thought it was enough of a bargain anyway so I kept mine. I do however try to warn people in advance of the issue when they say they are going to LB from out of state like me. But to be honest, shouldn't I have questioned how an export only bottling showed up at LB in quantity and on sale? To the experienced buyer at least it should send up a red flag to check the contents of the box.

Plus it's not like they were telling us not to check the box as in:

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! The Great and Powerful Oz has spoken!"

I agree that the experienced buyer would have had a big ???? going through thier head if they saw the stash of Silver Edition boxes on the shelf.

However, I was not an experienced buyer when it happened to me, and neither are most other buyers that are looking for maybe a gift for someone else or just starting a collection.

I honestly can’t see a reason to do this besides trying to fool the buyer. Which has happened to several people, including me.

Agreed, before Blanton's was available here, I had a friend pick me up a bottle when he was coming to town. It was one of the silver boxed versions. I knew silver wasn't available here but I got real excited anyway.... until I opened it. Now understand it was what I'd asked for and it was what I'd expected to pay but the whole thing was just unnecessary... Put it in a red box if you need something unique....

Not sure if we qualify as experienced buyers or not, but we remember seeing the silver Blanton's at LB in 2004 and not really being sure if it was different than regular Blanton's. I thought maybe the whiskey itself was chosen for LB, or maybe it was a limited local release. We passed it up for other novelties, but weren't sure WHAT exactly we passed up. Now we know - and it's easy to see how you got duped.
