I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed. The local liquor store has 2 or 3 bottles of Gold Label Maker's Mark in a locked glass cabinet. I had never seen this and was tempted to buy one but thought I'd research a little first - don't want to pay extra for a differnt colored label if the bourbon is the same. I did a brief search on this forum and found a (rather unflattering) thread about MM. From this thread I got the impression that the black seal was better than the red seal and that the gold seal was better yet. Anyone have experience with the gold label?

MM is not my favorite bourbon but at $20-$25 it is as good or better than some of the $40-$50 single barrel bourbons that I've tried. The gold label is $31.99 if I recall correctly

Depends on the proof. If it's 101.5 it's the import. I'd buy it. I've seen domestic gold wax that is the same Bourbon as the red wax.

I suspect Ken is correct in that the domestic Gold Label is a packaging change only. I believe you have the option of personalizing the gold label that comes in the box and that's pretty much what you are paying for so if you're looking for a display for your bar, it's fine. As for MM, I think that the majority here usually say that it is not a bad bourbon, just overpriced for what it is. I would fall into that majority. There are lots of lesser priced bourbons I'd buy that I feel are more complex than MM.

The domestic gold wax bottle contains the same bourbon as the standard red-wax bottle. The gold wax bottle is more decorative and you can obtain a personalized label for it. Unlike many on this website, I like Maker's Mark and believe that it is worth the price.

Dane, you hit it right on the head. MM is very good. It does lack complexity. Some days that is exactly what I'm looking for. Other days it isn't.
