VoL,

I'd gladly help you secure it if the need be?

Thanks, but I think I can get my kid to pick it up for me.

Now that I know BevMo has/had it, I'll ask him to check the Torrance store (near where he lives) first.

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

If you don't mind my asking, where did you find it, and were there any more bottles on the shelf?

I might be able to get my son, a travelling salesman in the L.A./Orange/Riverside area, to pick one up for me.

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

Dave, I pulled the only one off the shelf at the Orange Beverages and More, but I was at the Huntington Beach location yesterday and they also had ONE. Funny neither of there website inventories showed these! mad.gif I

'd gladly help you secure it if the need be? Strangely this seems to be one of the scarcest in this area; the GTS is incredibly abundant right now. I also just left Hi Time wine cellar where they had Saz and GTS but no WLW.

Even though WLW is plentiful right now in my area, you guys are starting to make me want to go ahead and get one of these. It must be pretty darn good stuff! yum.gif

I have to say, yes, very darn good stuff. And I will be looking a few weeks from now for another bottle to put away...

In my opinion, this is the bourbon jewel of this past Fall's Anitque collection. The ER is very similar to previous releases and the GTS is very good but not as good as the previous releases. The WLW is a delightful new taste addition!

In case anybody is still looking, I came across a store in Illinois that had 8 bottles of WLW on the shelf, they now have 6. She said she was suprised she got that many and they have just been sitting. If you PM me, I can give you the pertinent info and you can contact them. Not sure if they will ship or not, but it may be worth a try.

Dane, they are in Springfield, so an hour and 1/2 drive isn't bad, is it?

I purchased both a bottle of the WLW and Stagg 2005 recently , I have to agree the Weller is a better bourbon.

WOW!!! shocked.gif That is definitely saying a lot. How does it compare up against earlier GTS (2002-Spring 2005) in your opinion? It sounds like WLW is going to beat ER without much disagreement in terms of the Antique bottlings this time around.

I would agree with this. While the Eagle is a fine Bourbon, as someone here said it kinda gets lost in the company of the other three. I would agree with that.... To me GTS is still the king of that group. The WLW is wonderful and distinct. Probably the most unique (in a good way!) thing I've tried recently. The Saz is very tasty (though I wish it could have been a barrel proof as well).

Not here -- but, well, that's just me, I guess. I am somewhat disappointed in the barrel-proof Weller. Maybe I expected too much, being a wheater fan in general. I'm drinking it, mind you, but only when in the mood.

The Weller Antique is a nice addition to the lineup.....an interesting new drink. But a little one dimensional to me.....and my high expectations are also partly to blame. I have one open and had some last night. Two for the bunker and I'm not looking for any more. I'd drink the Stagg and ER17 before WLW or Saz if I had to chose.

To me, the ER17 is the biggest dissapointment this go around. I absolutely love the previous releases of this bourbon, but this time, again to me, it seems rather hot and dry.

I have to agree with this. I was pretty disappointed with the ER17. I didn't think the difference between that and the 10 year SB was near enough to justfy the difference in cost ($45 vs. $17 for the SB on sale). If anyone wants to trade for my other bottle of ER17, let me know.

i agree. It's nice to taste, but after a few nips i've had enough and I most likely won't want some for a while.

It's almost like a heavy dessert or a super sweet candy, it taste soooo good for the first few bites, but then you eat some more and you've had your fill for a while.

The Weller does add a nice new flavor profile to the AC, which is good for people who like sweeter bourbons.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the wLw but I'd have to have more than that as a reason to relegate the better part of a day for a trip to Springfield. Maybe if she still has it when Tim and I travel north for Chicago Whiskeyfest...

I'm with you on this. I was really looking forward to the barrel proof Weller, as the Weller 12yo and Weller Centennial are two of my favorites. But I found the barrel proof WLW rather flat and one-dimensional. Too bad. I love the rest of the Antique collection, though!

In my imperfect opinion, I think the '05 Sazerac is the finest of all Sazerac releases... definitely worth sampling...

It seems to have a "largeness" and depth to it that other years don't quite provide. Previous to this, my favorites were the 2004 and the 2002 in that order. For some reason, the 2003 isn't quite up there and the earlier releases also weren't quite as special.

Mind you, I love the heck out of every Sazerac release, but if we have to pick favorites, the 2005 is my pick. Buy it if you can!

Cheers,

-monte-

I have been told the ER 17 is not that much better than the ERSB 10....and, the ERSB 10 in the 1.75 liter bottle is actually 13yo.....true or false? Given the price of ER 17 is double that of ERSB 10, I'm not convinced enough to pay the extra dollars.....at least not yet anyways.

I retried the '05 ER17 last night. There is, indeed, a notable touch of oaky astringency at first taste -- but, patience is rewarded. I found that it 'burned off' quite quickly, and after 5 minutes of in-glass aeration, it disappeared, leaving a very refined and pleasant drink.

  • 3 weeks later...

Was in Louisville last weekend for a conference, tried the WLW at Bourbons

Bistro; didn't like it as much as the Weller 19, which is the best bourbon I've ever tasted. It was good, the finish was loooooong and good, but a little charred up front.

Others I enjoyed better over the weekend were the 04 Forrester Birthday (very good) and the ORVW 15/107. Bought, but haven't yet tried, the Weller Centennial.

Been lurking for a long time, best to all,

J

Welcome Mr Jon, glad to have you step out of the shadows and join in. Personally, I adore the Weller 19 as well and was saddened that BT was not able to continue it as part of the Antique Collection. However, by replacing it with GTS and now readding a wheater in the wLw (and at barrel proof) I think I'll forgive them. Weller Centennial doesn't make my top 10 but it isn't far down the ladder. I think you'll enjoy it when the time is right for the uncorking.:toast:
