Either one would be a cherished gift. For the price you're talking, I'd include Wild Turkey Tribute (if you can find it) as a choice as it comes in a gift box!

Those are some excellent whiskies and I can't deny their attraction. However you might want to take into account what their interest is in bourbon. If they are already a collector and have a medium to large collection they will likely be in there already(though an extra bottle is always nice) searching out some even less common bottles shows some serious effort(if someone really wanted to impress me they'd come up with a bottle of Classic Cask 21yo Rye wink.gif).

However if they are more of a drinker that likes the best and the older the better those as well as Pappy 23, the Black Maple Hill bottlings, George T Stagg and Eagle Rare 17yo would probably be excellent choices.

Others just like to try as many different bottlings as they can, sometimes one of the store-picked selections will get these people all excited or it may be a bottling with limited distibution like Four Roses Single Barrel.

Yes, going with what is recommended as the best can work and the best is the best and all that, but just because we can go out and get a Lafite-Rothschild or Opus One or any of the best wines, sometimes it's much more fun(and shows more effort) to find one of the smaller cult bottlings.

Just my own thoughts, while getting the best is nice, having someone put forth the effort to find the unique, special bottlings is even better.

I agree that a little knowledge about the person's collection and tastes might be useful, but if you don't have it or can't get it, don't worry much about it. I cannot conceive of a situation in which a Pappy 20, etc., would not be appreciated.

If it's readily available, I'd probably get Stagg, as it is a limited, once a year release, that seems to get snapped up.
