J&B Ultima

Anyone have an opinion on this one?

I have opportunity to get a bottle for $70 and I am wondering if I should. All I know is that it is a blend.

Ultima was J&B's answer to the Chivas Century Of Malts. Chivas did 100 malts in their blend and J&B has done 128 malts and grain whiskies. At $160 list it was more then double the list price of the Century of Malts. For the $70 that Shopper's Vinyard is asking it might be something interesting to buy if you are a scotch fan or collector.

Does it taste anything like JW Blue or better?

When you start mixing that amount of different tastes I would think that it would be a little flat with nothing really standing out. The Chivas Century is pretty good but it too is a bit flat. It's not in the JWB area though IMO.

Something is up with this Ultima. Ii have now seen it in 2 more places for like $70-$80, fron what they claim the original pric is $150+.

I don't see how buying odd casks and leftovers, mixing them and calling it something pretentious.. constitutes a rare gem.

Tim is referring humorously (of course!) to the occasional practice of some on the board including yours truly to blend bourbons and other whiskeys at home to get a specific taste. For some again (not all to be sure) this is an application of the same idea behind making a Manhattan or other cocktail. I understand by the way some brands of bourbon are combinations of bourbon from more than one distillery.

I do it myself, with lower and middle shelf liquours, and sometimes even improve them.

but I don't think the blend is better, generally, than the originals.. and the WORTH of the blend is generally about an average of the originals..

ya don't often get more out of the bottle than you put into it.

I have found that most blends aren't great value, with a *handful* of exceptions.. but hey, that applies to most things in life.

If you want bargains, expect to chase em. And don't count on instant results, either..

Well I picked up 3 bottles for $49.99 CDN a piece yesterday. Couldn't believe my eyes when I went into this small, obscure little liquor store and found. Can't believe its still on the shelves!
