I had a girlfriend in college who drank Scotch and diet Dr. Pepper. (Actually tastes WORSE than it sounds!) Boy did I hate having to order those for her. Fortunately, she had "charms" that made it worthwhile.....

We are at the height of the girl scout cookie season, and my wife is a local scout leader so I'm immersed in caramel delites, pnut butter patties and cartwheels right now. A couple years ago I was hunting through my cocktail recipie book when I came upon a "dirty girl scout". It has kahlua, creme de menthe and vodka in it and we had all those on hand, so I made one to serve to my wife. It tastes like a thin mint.

What was that stuff we used to roll up and smoke with it?

At the time, I was a Borkum Riff man....... Still have those old pipes around here somewhere.

As the 30th anniversary approaches of my H.S. graduation, I recall one more ex-drink. I guess you could call it an ex-spirit. On my graduation night, for some long lost and completely unknown, stupid & illogical reason, I decided I would drink Scotch for the first time in my life to celebrate the event. I cannot remember the label, but I bought a bottle (a pint as I dimly recall) and headed to a keg party at an apartment complex clubhouse we had rented.

About 12-15 beers later plus the pint, I was pretty well finished for the night and the rest of the week for that matter. The entire sad and sordid event happened in less than 3 hours and nearly ended my life before midnight. To this day, I have no idea how I got home that night. One of the few things I do clearly remember was seeing a police cruiser turning the corner onto my street just after I pulled into my parents' driveway......extremely, extremely lucky me! My grandmother always said an angel drove my car that night.

Needless to say, I do not remember much but my parents sure do/did and reminded me of it for a long, long time. The porcelain altar that night received my full sacrafice of all the Scotch I put in my body and ever will. I've always heard that you develop a taste for Scotch over a period of time and patience. Well, I developed it and lost it - all in one night!!!

Tequila Sunrises - the grenadine leaves a really bad taste when it comes back out your nose!

I have given up most of the sweet stuff as I have matured. Gone are the days of bourbon and ginger and when I drink bourbon it is on the rocks or neat. My drinking pattern varies with season more than completely abandoning a drink. In the hotter summer months, I tend to drink lighter ales and Mount Gay and tonic with a lime. During the winter, I drink more stouts and porters. I drink bourbon year round.

Some things that have become Ex-drinks for me:

Sloe Gin Fiz

Jamesons on the rocks

Wine coolers - (I should have never started  )

My ex drinks are:

Knob Creek (To much $$ for the taste, over-rated)

Elijah Craig 12yr (Not to my liking, although good for the $$)

Old Rip Van Winkle 10yr (Old Weller Antique is better in my opinion)

Wild Turkey Rare Breed (Gave me a headache...lol and cost to much $$)

My new drinks are

George T Stagg (Nursing a few bottle of Fall 2005)

Weller Larue (Getting one in Monday and will nurse it over time)

Old Weller Antique 107 (regular pour, great for the $$ and I like the Taste)

Old Grand Dad 114 (replacement as a rye when Stagg is gone, low cost)

Wild Turkey 101 (good for everyday pour, good for the $$)

wow, you all have stirred up some memories, many bad. In college I drank Sloe Gine fizzes (gag), Singapore Sling (good grief), Vodka Collins (have hated vodka for years now), Beam and Coke (I now hate ANY drink made with cola), and a cheap, cheap, cheap bourbon that I think was called Beams. It was not Jim Beam, or Beams Choice, just Beams. It was cheap, dirt cheap. I went through a margarita phase also. Now I mostly drink bourbon neat, gin and tonic, martinis (real ones....with gin), and the occasional rusty nail.

I also like sake with my sushi and sushimi and really enjoy a cheap Spanish brandy: Fundador. I first drank it while working on a project in the southern Philippines and still like it.

I should add that I will never, ever drink Everclear again. Also, when visiting a particularly cheap college friend at his apartment with vodka, make sure to take your own mixer. If not, you may end up pouring a package of lime kool-aide into the vodka only to discover he has no sugar. We drank it anyway. That was bad.

And one last addition: Moutai. This horrible, high proof, battery acid is quite popular in China even though it is very expensive. The chinese are very good at drinking large quantities of this and love to see just how drunk they can get you. Dreadful stuff.

I think my only EX drink is a White Russian. I was probably about 19 and very, very foolish.

One I remember not-so-fondly is the mudslide. Not the ice-cream based drink like you find at some restaurants, this was a layered concoction of vodka, irish cream and Kahlua and you drink it like a shot. Tasted like chocolate milk at the time, would taste like :shithappens: now

I think it was W.C. Fields that said,

"Water. Never touch the stuff. Fish fornicate in it"

Tequila is the only drink that will disagree with me every time I touch it.

I was in LA in May 2005 with two wrestling buddies - they were competing in LA hence the trip.

After a few slammers and lots of beer I dimly remember spraying watery vomit over my heavyweight buddies legs. He was not impressed when I told him to stop whining and he should be thankful that his trousers had no turnups in them!

Thank the Lord he saw the funny side.

Tequila slammers are now off my shopping list!

When I first started drinking, I must confess that about all I could bear to drink was Peach Schnapps. Now I don't know that I could stomach the stuff.

Also Malibu.

Beer & Hard Cider, of course, and still drink both.

I guess the most common hard liquor type drink I'd have had back then would have been a rum and coke.

Jagermeister and coke. What was I thinking? What IS that stuff anyway?

Years ago I was into rum and coke, and Vodka cranberry with extra lime. I still don't mind the Vodka cranberry on a hot day....very refreshing! It's a nice "have several while your at the beach" drink as well.

When I first started drinking I used to drink E&J brandy with my friends. We were all underage so our selection was limited but we went with that because it was cheap and strong. From there we moved on to this stuff called Cisco (aka “Liquid Crack†because it was so easy to drink large quantities of and would get you drunk pretty fast.). It’s basically two kinds of wine mixed together to produce an 18% alcohol concoction. It was very sweet and came in many flavors (Berry, Red, Strawberry (my favorite at the time), peach, and probably some others.), if it was not available you could substitute this other stuff called MD 20/20 that everyone referred to as “Mad Dog†because it was the exact same stuff in a different bottle. I shudder at the thought off drinking either of those. They were really good at first but over time began to taste absolutely repulsive to me.

Then I went on to college and after getting everyone hooked on the Cisco I moved on to Vodka. Up until this point I was unable to go into the liquor store and buy myself so I was never able to look around and check out prices but now it was a different story as I was living in Newark so being 17 was close enough to being 21 and nobody bothered me or ID’d me when I went in and bought things. Naturally, being a poor college student, I went with the cheapest stuff I could find (1.75 litre bottles of Majorska, Leeds, or whatever else was less than $15).

After transferring back home I once again found myself in the same predicament I was in before I left for college, I was under 21 and now living in an area where I would be ID’d every time I tried to buy. Fortunately I was in good with a manager at the place I was working at the time and she got me my booze along with some 21 year old friends from high school. I switched between vodka, Rumple Minze (peppermint schnapps), Black Haus (Blackberry schnapps), and blackberry brandy before trying and settling with 151 (1 part 151, 3 parts iced tea, and 3 ice cubes) which I drank for quite a while until I began to loathe the taste of 151. I then switched back to vodka and drank it until I saw an interesting bottle of something else in the liquor store about 2 years ago. It had an odd shape and the top of the bottle was coated in red wax. I picked it up to try it and the rest is history.

When I was in college, I drank Busch beer and Gennessee cream ale for about a week. Then my 1st bottle of Jim Beam white label arrived. After that it was JD black label (still 90 proof back then). After that it was Jim Beam black. Now it is whatever suites my fancy as my collection is now over 100 different bottles!

Neat discussion.

I started with Singapore Slings & Seagrams Wine Coolers (!), as well as whatever beer was provided at whatever party I was at.

I moved on to Midori Sours, White Russians, and Red Wine, but continued to drink beer.

Then I started to drink good beer, like Gordon Biersch. Wine became primary passion. Every once in a while I would crack a bottle of johnny walker black.

Then my brother in law introduced me to single malt scotches, and I finished off a bottle of JWB, never to return. I bought exactly two bottles of single malt scotch over the course of a year before I discovered bourbon.

Now I would say that I drink red wine mostly, then fine bourbons, and every once in a while a beer.

I must confess I went through a few rather embarrassing drinking stages. My first experiences were with beer, I would have to drain the whole bottle in one gulp, just to get through it and then I went on to screwdrivers, again mixed strong and chugged to avoid the taste. Then I went on to actually drinking beer, but Natural Light, I don't know if now I'd actually call it beer. It was awful, but for some reason I enjoyed it and then onto Long Island Iced Tea, but a horrible strength with awful generic alcohols and a shot of 151 added in for extra layers to be burned off my esophagus. Then for the worse, when I was under a budget crunch in college, it descended down to box wine. I would once again have to chug it to avoid the horrible taste. I shutter to think of it now. Thank goodness someone finally showed me IPA's, real wine and good whiskey and moderation.

Funny you should mention Natural Light. When AB first brought it out, it wasn't too bad and was billed as "the beer to drink with food". Later, after Bud Light came out it became the "B" light beer from AB and really went downhill. My last stint in college back in late 80s it was MUCH better than THE BEAST (Milwaukee's Best) at only a little more cost.

The Beast is probably the worst I've ever had. It rings of notes of urine and rusted metal. Ewwwwwww.

Another horrible beer was only sold at this Osco near where I went to college, it was $7 a thirty pack and it tasted every drop of it. I once used to remove all the stain from my deck.
