Bourbon intro night

It's great to get back on this site after a break.

I met up with some old Army buddies a couple of weeks back and we had a Spag Bol and chilled night in - even wives were allowed!

It was a great night with plenty of chatting, good food and laughs. I knew this may be the place to introduce decent Bourbon to a couple of people who had not really come across it before.

I chose 3 very different and relatively high proof whiskeys but ones I knew would work. After all the food was gone and we were relaxed I broke out RHF, VW12YO Lot B, and Knob creek.

After a quick intro as to what bourbon is and how it is made we got to the drinking. Not to draw the story out too long, eveyone really enjoyed the drinks and a couple of the guys really picked my brains and wanted to know where/how they could start collecting/learning about decent Bourbon. I pointed them to this site...

The after dinner drinks were the highlight of the night and it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling to be with good mates and fine whiskey.

Anyone got any Bourbon stories to share?

Not really, the number of my friends that drink at all is small, and of those that remain, a large percentage view "hard liquor" as either something to be mixed or something to shoot to get hammered.

Of my 2 friends that 'get it'; one doesn't drink whiskey due to losing a fight with a bottle Jack Daniels in his teen years, (he's a Gin guy now) and the other is a single malt scotch snob who generally thumbs his nose at bourbon. I'm working on him, and he's budged a bit recently, but not much.

So I'm pretty much an island here. In Kentucky too, which is embarrassing.

No real Bourbon buddies and you live in Kentucky! I feel your pain...

Booze and the Army tends to go hand in hand so always fun to be had - I left in 1998.

There is a very strong Scotch and Irish snob factor here in the UK which is understandable I guess. That's why I found it very satisfying to hold the guys attention (a couple of them really enjoy Scotch.)

In fact one guy said RHF was the best whiskey he had ever tasted, 2 loved the VW and Russ plumped for the Knob Creek. I attempted to be objective about all of them and did not sway them in any direction.

We will have to do it again sometime for sure...
