Blue Smoke 18yo

I saw BT bottling the ORVW Blue Smoke 18yo again. As I recall, Blue Smoke is a rest/bar in NYC that has had Julian bottle this for them before. I also recall that they didn't sell bottles ...... only by the drink. Can any locals confirm this.......I'd sure like a bottle of VW 18yo if it becomes available by the bottle.

True, Randy, it's a bar-b-que restaurant in Manhattan and it is sold by the drink at the bar and in the restaurant. It is good, similar to ORVW 15 year old but with more leather and taste I would say. It might even be the same as the current 20 year old, I don't know. It has a nice label. The food is good there too but coming from Texas you may take the view there is nothing about bar-b-que New Yorkers can teach you.

Have you checked to see if Binny's still has any of their 18yr old? I wouldn't think it's really any different.

I remember seeing Mark's pictures of the bottle on his old site. I think anything can be bought for a price. And if someone has the change to pay the price, it seems like Randy has it!!!

Several of us will be at Binny's next week as part of WhiskeyFest Chicago. I'll be sure and ask about their 18yo.

I remember Mark getting a bottle several years ago. I was hopeing that Blue Smoke changed their "official" policy about selling bottles and a local would help me get one.

As for smoking meats and BBQ.....I'm always interested in how different areas do it. I have three different pits I use depending upon the amount of meat I'm cooking and what I'm cooking. When I travel and eat BBQ, I always ask to see their cooker and ask questions about woods used, marinades, rubs, etc. Texans have their way of doing things......mostly beef brisket.....but I've had good Que in a lot of places outside Texas.

Binny's website doesn't have it anymore. If you haven't seen it, the label looks a lot like the Lot B bottle with the Binny's logo in the place of the "12 Years Old Lot B" writing. Looking at my bottle, it says "Distilled June 10th, 1985 Bottled December, 2003 Single Cask Hand-Selected Exclusively for Binny's Beverage Depot" It's 121.6 proof(I think barrel proof), I'm not sure why more people haven't said anything about this bottle. They had it on their site for like 2 years, and I think I paid around $120 (maybe this is the reason) for it. But it's a barrel proof 18 year old Van Winkle, I figured more people would have been excited about it.

I had heard that they won't sell this bottling except at the stores from someone who tried to order one and have it shipped. It's been months since I was told that but I'm reasonably sure it was what he was told when he called to inquire about getting a bottle.

I inquired a few weeks back about the Binny's bottling. They said it's gone. I think now that Stitzel/Weller stock is drying up...anything from S/W is being snapped up pretty quickly.

Discovered too late -- after it's long gone -- to get too excited about. But, some of us did get a chance to taste from a fellow SB.com'er's bottle recently, and it's exceptional stuff!

Damn.............. I remember like 10 bottles sitting in a case a Binny's wanting to be bought. But that was like a 1 1/2 years ago.

Just an interesting note on the Blue Smoke bottle. To make a long story short, about 2 YEARS AGO (ie. it is long gone now) a liquor store in NYC was able to pick up some of the BS 18 from the distributor. It was selling for around $65 a bottle until the restaurant complained and, I believe, purchased it back via the distributor.
