Does anyone have any tasting notes or comments or comments on the Fall 2005 Stagg (Hazmat II)? I'm really interested in picking up a bottle, but I'd like to know a little more first.

Tonight, I've been having Knob Creek on the rocks (for the first time and I dont know if I will again)

Is the Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit worth buying? How does it compare against other bourbons in its price range? And does anyone have any tastings notes and/or comments?

PS I am a big fan of the WT Rare Breed

IMHO, it is worth it. You cannot lose on either one but I rate WTKS slightly better after comparing it with Rare Breed side-by-side. As for others in the price range ($45 in my area), hard to say due to price variations from region to region, and, some of the mid-$45+ bourbon is 100+ proof (Rock Hill Farms, Stagg, Booker's) while others that are very, very good are under 95 proof -such as Blanton's. Sometimes, it's hard to compare apples-to-apples when it comes to bourbon. In any event, you cannot go wrong with any of the above-mentioned - including KS and Rare Breed for sure.

NOW, for the pours of the present evening:

First, ORVW 15-107

Second, Blanton's.

I am sipping a small Maker's before going out to lunch. Leadbelly is cranked up on the stereo doing what he does best. What a winning combination!

Goodnight Irene!

You'll find the "Search" function on the toolbar above a useful device. Had you searched, for example, for "2005 Fall Stagg" you would have found this thread, among others:

Ist and 2nd pour of the evening was WTRB. Having a WT 101 right now. Maybe I'll keep the theme going and have a WT rye next.....if I only had some WTKS!

That is a nice plan, I have em all. I might join ya on that trip tonight....I usually like to stick to one bourbon, sit down and enjoy a couple of pours for the evening. When I do switch up, try to keep it to 2 a night, maybe 3 differnt ones on occasion.

But I diffinetly think I will have a couple of those tonight. Just brought home a new bottle of Weller Ant 107.

I'm having a pour of Kentucky Vintage 1997/2005. The first few sips gave me a distinct menthol impression, which has quieted down to a background level. Smooth and sweet.

I like it, but I'll reserve final judgement on it until I revisit it a few times.

OK, I started with the Lot B (man is that easy drinkin, smooooth or what) then on to the Weller Ant 107. But as much as I like it , it didnt follow the lot B good at all.

As a followup to the KV, I had some WT Rye, and now some Jim Beam Black (from a miniature). I'm glad I tried the JB Black - it'll be worth getting a full-sized bottle of this - and the WT Rye was (as always) nice stuff.

First up, Eagle Rare 10 Single Barrel, another new bottle and I like it very much especially when you consider the price, especially if you can find it on sale. After my second glass, I decided to up it a notch to Stagg neat, which is outstanding and so sweet but must be sipped with caution. I'll see where the night takes me from here on out.

Bulleit, neat, actually from a Riedel Vinum Cognac Hennessy glass, which has come to be my favoite bourbon and tequila glass, I own the Single Malt glasses and I still prefer them for Scotch, but I do believe that for bourbon this cognac glass is better. It is has about a three inch stem which is better for admiring the color and with the shape it almost totally elimated the overwhelming alcohol smell that can come from snifters and it holds in the aroma as opposed to a tumbler which does give you that classic look from the Bogart movies but isnt very efficent. Anybody else use any interesting glassware?

Cheers

Tonight I poured Knob Creek for the first time ever. I was barbequeing up some chicken skewers, so I was merely enjoying the drink not immersing myself as usual. No complaints about the Knob Creek so far...

For dinner I poured a 2003 Fenestra Alvarelhao, a very nice varietal that is not grown very often in California. Went well with the smokey bacon-wrapped chicken that I took off the grill. Yes, red wine is not generally recommended for chicken, but I don't drink whites, so I work to find reds that pair with traditional white wine paired foods...

I just had Knob Creek for the first time as well the other night, It was poured on the rocks, which softened the blow. Also that night I had Woodford for the first time in a long time and the Knob Creek was definately much, much better. But when I'm hunting in that price range, I prefer Eagle Rare Single Barrel 10.

Tonight, I'm drink Bulleit, neat, which is another bourbon in that price range, which I'd say is pretty comprable to Knob, The bulleit's much better if its taken in small sips because it isn't over smooth, but the flavor on the palate isn't too bad.

Anyone have any comments on Bulleit? I'm drinking it and I'm not quite sure what I think.

There is quite a bit of info on Bulleit, just check the search function.

Hey Tim,

Nice to see another new member like myself. Like you I asked a lot of questions and I still do. It's a great way to learn.

I found a couple of ways that I could help myself so that I wasn't asking questions that...well...I could answer myself.

First, before I responded to a thread, I'd try to start at the beginning and read through, if possible. What I found was that a lot of the time the question I was asking was already answered somewhere in the thread.

Second, and I'm gonna admit, I was the BIGGEST dork about this for a long time, I finally figured out that at the top on the red bar the search function will take you to a lot of places and teach you a lot of cool stuff. These guys are really nice, but I think all that bourbon has affected their memories, so I'd rather rely on the search function so I can figure out what they really said when they were sober enough to type.

As a question occurs to you, just pick a key word, type it in and it will bring up several threads normally. The really cool thing about this is, you normally get your original question answered, but as your reading other threads you usually find out stuff you would have never thought to ask in the first place! Double bonus.

Happy hunting! and welcome to the group,

P.S. I still manage to ask a fair amount of stupid questions.

P.S.S. Every body here is very helpful, Chuck Cowdery I believe writes stories for the Enquirer or the Star, but seems to be very knowledgeable about bourbon, Tim (TnTBourbon) the way he buys and sells liquor you'd think he works in a liquor store (again very knowledgeable guy), and Ed (Pepcycle) bourbonian of the year is very knowledgeable, no sense of humor, a little mentally unstable, but very knowledgeable. I could name everybody here as being as being a good source, but as it stands now, I think I'm probably already going to be banned from the board.

For anyone new to the board,

It should be pointed out, although never meeting face to face with any of the 3 above libeled persons, I have ultimate respect for each of them.

Old Charter Proprietor's Reserve over a couple od rocks. We're having the first blistering hot weather of summer and the spicy finish seems to somehow hit the spot.

Two jiggers of Jack (Silver Select) followed by Woodford Reserve both straight up. Both are really hitting the spot but the Jack has an early lead tonight...

Old Pogue. Don't have it often, because I only have 1 bottle and it is not for sale in OK. Tasty stuff, very smoky. Going good with barbequed Tri-tip tonight.
