So tonight I reward myself with some GT Stagg. I think I felt better just pouring it, yes I am certain...Just what the Dr. ordered!

I wonder if my HMO will cover this stuff?

A new bottle, A.H. Hirsch 16, I was very pleased, it wont be around much longer so pick a bottle up if you have the opportunity. The Hirsch is very similar to the Pappy 15, if the wheat was substituted with rye

I'm revisiting my Kentucky Vintage 8yo - and the menthol I noticed on first pour is gone this time. Very nice!

Stagg 131.8 with a drop of water. very nice, but from the bottom of the bottle so a decent amount of char, but the water helps it nicely.

Had a WT 101 before dinner, and now having a EWSB for my after dinner drink....this stuff is really startring to grow on me....... Very mellow.

I agree about the EWSB, very nice, very smooth. However I did not go the smooth route tonight. First was PVW 15 YO, then RR 101, and finally the last of my Spring 2005 GTS. Luckily I have another in the bunker in case of emergency.

I knew I had a bottle of the Hirsch 16 year old and, for some reason, I thought it was already open. Turns out it wasn't, a condition I corrected immediately. Though "only" 16 years old, this whiskey was distilled in 1974, and I swear there is something about the barrels from then as compared to now. Just such a nice sweetness but also something almost like effervescence, a tingly sensation that I really enjoy. Wood is there, but subtle. This is a candy bourbon.

Why does it have to be that all of the most nearly perfect bourbons are no longer available?

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think you may have mentioned what could be the root cause in another thread....mainly that the entry proofs are higher now.

I've had 8 y.o. bourbons from the 60's that could easily stand with 15-20 y.o.'s of today.

I opened the evening with a just-opened AAA 10yo - mmmmm, and cheap to boot. Then another good-but-cheap favorite of mine, Old Fitz BIB. Finally, I'm in the midst of my nightcap - and I decided to go premium, with Pappy Van Winkle 15. Great as always... I better bunker a couple more of them.
