Just got my bottle of Wild Turkey Tribute in the mail today and I was so excited. I had to wait til I got off work to enjoy it and it was worth the wait. It was the first time I've had it and I was so impressed. I was amazed and the richness and the perfect balance, (or at least the best I've had) I am really happy with my purchase.

I've been enjoying a couple of shots of Rare Breed this evening.

For some reason, lately, I've been trying to not have as many bottles open at the same time (I've had dozens open at the same time in the past). I would also rarely sample the same bottle twice in an evening, but lately, I've been sticking with one choice, maybe two, for the course of an evening.

Started out with a short pour of Lot B and now onto Rare Breed. We'll see if I have one more in me tonight.

Tonight I have started out with AAA 10 year old.

First, I retired a bottle with one good healthy pour in it. I little later I had forgotten what I had filled my glass with. I tried to identify it, but came up blank. Brown sugar sweetness, vanilla, maybe a hint of cookie spice. Lovely balanced bourbon, just the right age, but I couldn't put a name to it till I remembered what I had poured. It was so good that I opened another bottle. I think that this might be an older bottle, maybe even a dusty. Cinnamon is much more to the fore in this bottle.

Ed your comment about retiring a bottle with a healthy last pour reminded me of the last two times I've hit the end of a bottle. In my case both times I had less than half of a normal pour. This happened last night when I went to pour a Rittenhouse Rye BIB. I stood staring at the glass like if stood there long enough it was somehow magically going to fill itself the rest of the way. The thought then occurred to me to fill it the rest of the way with something else, I couldn't talk myself in to it. I finally thought about walking to the basement to get another bottle of Rittenhouse and topping it off, too far.

After what seemed like 5 minutes, I stood their and drank the tidbit left in my glass and reached for another selection.

Well, the reason for that is simple. The axiom only applies to bourbon and, unless your brother-in-law was recently in Japan (or possibly Tennessee -- don't ask why), it's unlikely that he gave you any bourbon!

Currently enjoying EWSB 1996 while watching drag racing on the tube....do bourbon and drag racing go together?? Mint Juleps and the Kentucky Derby, Jim Beam and IRL, Crown Royal and NASCAR, I guess it might be alright.

Tonight... I am having a small pour of WT101. For $19 its not bad at all, sweet and rye. I am also dipping into my Fall Stagg. :cool:

Had a little mini-tasting for myself tonight. I just picked up a mini-bottle of Blanton's I've never had it so I figured I'd get the mini first and see how I liked it. So then after tasting it I compared it to many bourbons I already own. I paired it with ERSB 90 and it trounced my Eagle. Then I put it up against Tribute and it was trounced. Then I pulled out my bottle of Hirsch 16 and the hirsch was victorious, then I paired it with Lot B, which I know are not made similarly at all, but I find of similarities, smoothness, sweetness, maple syrup, viscosity and a refined gentility.

On the whole I like the Blantons very much and I think I'm going to have to get myself a 750 ml bottle.

Wow, I've had Blantons a few times in bars and liked it but did not love it. I think that ERSB is a great pour and would believe that I'd prefer it to Blantons side by side.

Looks like I have some work to do.

Besides trying to come to terms with my first bottle of Mellow Corn, I finished the night with a pour of Old Fitz 1849. I bought this bottle a year ago, just after they dropped the (8yo) age statement. It is really nice. IMO, avoid the newest version that says "charcoal filtered", it has lost most of its character.

A little Pure Kentucky XO on ice, not sure why but I just felt like someting on ice. Like most pours I think this really loses some of it's qualities on ice, but on the other hand really has a pretty darn good flavor still since at 107 it can handle the proofing down... Anyway you look at it a nice drink after watching the Angels game at the stadium! :grin:

Eagle Rare 17. I don't get this one, it always burns on the way down. It is expensive, rare, and I don't particularily care for it. Oh well, BT's stuff can't always be a home run.

This bottle jumped into my cart at Safeway because of a neck hangar with poker chips. What the hell I'm going to do with poker chips?

The obligatory report on opening: Easy. Somehow the wax was 3/4 broken away, although the seal was still intact.

OTR I'm getting a mix of cinnamon, brown sugar and charcoal.

My first one was a double. After supper I think I'll do it again.
