About the Englanders

Dick and Pete; they were in from London last week for Pete's son / Joy's nephew's wedding. They came, armed with Glenmorainge 10 year old, Cask Strength Scotch, weighing in at 100 proof (European) or 57.4% actual alcohol by volume. This is clearly outstanding Scotch, if there be such a thing, and just darned near impossible for me to acquire. So I was happy to share. (Okay, so it could have been Ten High and I'd still be happy to share.)

Their reaction to the Stagg was notable, common I would say now also. Their reaction to the nose literally set them back in their chairs. I assured them that they could probably stop here and still experience most of the full flavor. Of course they weren't buying that. Pete's first words after a small sip were near exactly the same as my friend, Tom, a few months back; "Oh … I've never tasted anything like that ... ever." It sounds a little classier with the London accent. Dick, the serious Scotch man, was speechless. Finally, after carefully swishing, swirling, sniffing and all he delightfully concurred, "That is outstanding, simply outstanding." By this time Pete was excitedly questioning if this stuff would ever quit evaporating off the sides of his tongue. I believe that is what you would call a very … long finish.

We sampled several more Bourbons and some Bernheim Wheat over the next few nights. I was regrettably out of any Sazerac or AH Hirsch to compare with the Wheat. The Scotch, (remember the Scotch,) the Scotch actually seemed a little plain, even harsh in comparison to the Antiques. I sent my friends home with a bottle of Eagle Rare 17 year to share with their friends at home as an example of what real American Bourbon can be … in time.
