I FINALLY opened a Pyrat Pistol that I had purchased about a month or two ago. My salesman suggested that I do a mix with tonic. I first tried just a room temperature pour straight up and wowza, was that ever great! I then poured the rest of it into a wine glass and added tonic and ice. Double wowza! Sitting on the back patio, I kept thinking move over Gin and tonic, there's a new kid on the block.

Man alive, if all rum is like this, I'm gonna be buying some rum.:bowdown:

If you REALLY want something special and have a few extra bucks to spend, try Pyrat Cask 1623. One of the best rums I have ever had if not the best.

Never tried the Cask or Pistol, only the XO which is delicious. It's so good straight up, never considered diluting it... but summer is here, perhaps it's time to give it a go.

Ken I did buy it. It's my first foray into rums. Prior to this I've pretty much stuck to Myers dark. I bought the XO and also Mount Gay Sugar Cane and also Appleton Estate. Haven't tried any yet but looking forward to them and glad that I got such great recommendations from here! Greg

I've heard great things abou the Appleton Estate, how much does it run and does anyone have any tasting notes?

I too have recently discovered the tastiness of Rum! My current favorite is El Dorado 15yr. It is a product of Ghana and man it is good! I have a bottle of the Pyrat XO that I have yet to open. Looks like that may happen tonight!

since my oringinal post I had the opportunity to pick up a Barbancourt 15yo. Not as tasty as the Pyrat, but still nothing to sneeze at. My plan is to periodically pick up a bottle and research.

the pyrat xo is delicious at $20-25 a bottle. haven't tried the cask 23 yet, at $250 or so it's out of my price range. the blanco is an easy sippin or mixing rum at $15. blanco has a slight citrus finish. Enjoy.

I was considering buying a bottle of the Cask 23 and asked the spirits manager (whose advice I have learned to respect) about it. He said that it is a very good rum, but did not believe it was worth 10X the price. He thought that if I was going to spend over $200 on a bottle of liquor that it would be much better spent on scotch.

Something would have to be amazing for it to be worth that kind of money, to me. I find so many things I really enjoy under $50 I really can't imagine going that high for one bottle. Even Tribute (my all time favorite) was only $90! Cask 23 is probably going to stay on my "never tried it" list.

I have a Pyrat Cask 23 and I will say it was worth every penny. I dont mind spending the big bucks every once in a while on a rare or special spirit. I just always hope the spirit is worth it. The Cask was worth it IMHO.

Will I replace?? I dont know. This is something I pretty much drink myself. I will pour the Pyrat XO or Santa Theresersa 1796 for guests who enjoy fine rum. I still have 2/3 my bottle and I do nurse it.

If you havent tried all the different rums out there, I think you should spend the money on several bottles of different rums ( Cruzan SB, Agnastura 1919 & 1824, ST 1796:bowdown: , Rhum Barbacourt 15, Zacappa 23 yo, El Dorado 15,......) Once you find that you enjoy rum enough then you might go and get the bottle of Pyrat Cask.

I have tried Pyrat and Cruzan SB, and both are good. The Pyrat definatly has a heavy mollasses flavor, while the Cruzan SB is a lighter color, with not quite full flavor and hints of oak and sugar cane. If I am in the mood for a more full flavor, Ron Matusalem Rum Gran Reserve is more maple and semi-sweet, Appleton Estate VX Jamaican Rum, is more sweet with tastes of fruit, hardly a sipping rum, but good none-the-less. Pampero Rum Aniversario has to be one of my favorites right now, with strong oak tastes, and a perfect mix of aged rums. Mount Gay Extra Old Rum is more flavorful than the Cruzan SB, but not as full flavored as the Ron Matusalem. I think I am going to go and blend 2 parts Pyrat XO to 1 part Ron Matusalem and see how she does.

I would have to say, my order of favorite rums, would have to be:

1. Ron Pampero Aniversario

2. Pyrat XO Reserve

3. Ron Matusalem Gran Reserve

4. Mount Gay Extra Old Rum

5. Cruzan Single Barrel

6. Appleton Estate VX

6. Bacardi 8 yr

I do know that I put 6 twice, Because they both barely make my sipping rum list, I am waiting to try the 10 Cane Rum, and Flor de Cana Centenario Rum. Has anyone tried these?

Has anyone noticed that the pyrat XO has gone from heavy and sweet to tasting like bacardi gold???

I have 3 bottles and there is a HUGE difference, numbers starting with

121... = the best rum I have ever tasted

653... = crap ...thought someone put barcardi gold in the bottle..

also label changed and cork is now fake....bottle stayed unchanged.

please post bottle numbers.....

I've only had Pyrat twice, it is a blend of rums brought to the island from elsewhere I understand so its character probably will change from time to time although the variance mentioned seems large. In the samples I tried, I felt I could detect a proportion of aged Angostura rum, the Trinidad and Tobago marque which has a distinctive, rubbery-like note.

I actually do like the orange as well, its a nice unique rum characteristic. The orange complements the Pyrat Cask 1623 (cask 23) very well.

I think the XO tastes like an orange liqueur with little or no rum character. Not a repeat buy for me.

As I've noted in other threads, I'm a huge fan of the Bali hai resteraunt in San Diego. I hit the bar up on Tuesdays and I'm working my way through their specality rums list.

Appleton 12yr is pretty damn good.

Zaya is probably my favorite.

Rhum Babbencourt 18yr is total shite. Smells like kerosene and tastes worse. I'd have to check my tasting notes (on my copy of their menu) as for what I really liked and didn't care for.

I think the Caruzen black strap tastes just like pancake syrup. very sweet!

If you like the Appleton Extra (12 yo), you really should try the 21 year old appleton (blue box). IMHO, its definitely a step up from the extra.
