Recent Acquistions - DC, VA & KY

Recently made a number of acquisitions in DC (and Northen Virginia).

In DC, after canvassing close to a dozen liquor stores, I found a bottle of Old Pogue, three bottles of Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve 101, one 750ml bottle and one 1.75L bottle of Old Fitz BIB from DSP-KY-16 (Stitzel-Weller), two bottles of ORVW 15/107, and two bottles of Eagle Rare 101.

In Virginia, I found a bottle of Old Bernheim Wheat Whiskey at the ABC Store that's maybe only a hundred yards from my apartment. I believe this is recently new to VA.

For those interested in trading, two of the WT RR101 bottles are available for trade, as are the two ORVW 15/107s (I have a few stockpiled already). I can also get ahold of more Eagle Rare 101 (at about $20/bottle), WT RR 101 (at about $30/bottle) and ORVW 15/107 (at about $50/bottle) if anyone wants some (these are actual prices, no mark-up from me).

Also just had an old friend visit from KY and she brought with her an armful of goodies from the Lexington Liquor Barn. God bless her for being willing to pack all of these with her on the plane - she put four bottles in her checked luggage and two in her carry-on.

This generous gal, incidentally, is responsible for me getting into bourbon, as my several trips to visit her in KY while we were dating (we're no longer involved, but are good friends) got me interested in bourbon after touring several distilleries, tasting bourbon balls, smelling the limestone water, buying bourbon for more enlightened friends, and enjoying my first bottle of bourbon - a regular bottle of Ancient Age, purchased cheap at a drugstore when I was on a really tight budget.

She brought me one bottle each of Four Roses Single Barrel, Ancient Ancient Age 10 yr old 86 proof, Very Old Barton 6 yr old 100 proof, Old Charter 12 year old "The Classic 90," OFBB 2005, and Hancock's Reserve (taking advantage of the $27/bottle sale at Liquor Barn).

Thanks for the interest in trades via PM. I am at the stage where I'm going to be picking up more bottles in DC to meet demand, so I'm probably going to have to wait until the rain stops & flood waters recede so I can get into DC and figure out how many bottles are actually available before I can agree to more trades or pick-ups on the ER101 and ORVW15/107. If I've already agreed to a trade with you or to try to pick up bottles for you, don't worry, we're all set.

The WTRR101 is still up for trade, however, as are the two remaining bottles of EWSB '88 that I picked up on Cape Cod in the Spring.

Also, if folks are interested, looking at my notes from a visit to a somewhat overpriced liquor store near Chinatown (forget the name right now), I see that I can get quite a few bottles of Corner Creek Reserve for $25 (no idea how rare it is out there, but this was only the second time I've seen it), 2 bottles of EWSB 1990 for $28, Joshua Brook for $27, and the full line of Classic Cask and Black Maple HIll (recent version) for some rather exorbitant prices, IMO - PM me if you're really interested. Also, the Hirsch Selections - I think they are ryes - both 8 year old and 10 year old for $39 and $47. And if anyone is real desparate for OFBB2004, it can be had for $50 (though it can be had cheaper at the Liquor Barn in Lexington, KY). These are all pre-tax prices from my notes - DC liquor tax is about 9%.

EWSB 1990 for $28,

Yeah, I was fairly surprised to see it for that low of a price, since the store tends to be rather overpriced generally. But I wasn't sure if 1990 was an off year or something. I imagine they got them in several years ago and just haven't moved them, so haven't bothered changing the price.

No question: that's gotta be Central Liquors. Nice selection but you definitely pay a steep premium.

More ORVW and ER101 has been picked up for those who placed an order - look for a PM soon if you've already contacted me. I think I've tapped DC out of known bottles of ORVW, but there may still be a few ER101s out there at $23/bottle (pre-tax). Wasn't able to get the EWSB 1990 yet - it was at a different store.

Between picking up bottles for other folks, and amassing my own stash for the bunker, I temporarily have quite the cache of ORVW15/107. All of it is claimed, and most of it will be shipping out shortly. Sadly, I have plundered DC liquor stores of all known bottles.

Also have 5 bottles of Eagle Rare 101, all of which are also claimed, and four of which will be shipping out shortly.

I've got 5 bottles waiting for me in Texas my sister picked up for me on her last trip to Kentucky. How are you shipping them? I do not want to wait until I go back in Late October to retrieve my stash. It's killing me to have all that there, and mine, and yet I can't savor it!

I'd suggest wrapping bottles in bubble wrap or foam, then place in box full of foam peanuts. I had put down some laminate wood flooring; installation uses an 1/8" foam under the flooring. I found this foam worked very good for packing material; a 3ft x 100ft roll cost about $25 at Home Depot.

I've only shipped a couple bottles so far, with a combination of packing paper and some bubble wrap, but mostly just a lot of packing paper.

I won't have a car 'til the fall, so I can't drive to Home Depot to pick up foam or anything fancy.

Styrofoam wine shippers work very well for bourbon bottles that will fit into them (i.e. Antique collection, pappy, 12yo Lot B, etc.)
