Hey Bettye Jo, I've really enjoyed all of the info you have provided in the past. You're doing an awsome job as our famous insider.

The only info I can add to your bottle of Glen Garloch is that the 10yr, 15yr and 21yr go for $22, 49, and 115 in the Austin area.

Hope that shed a little light on your scotch question.

I know that the Whisky Exchange in London had a bottle of Scotch about 4 years ago for 29,000 GB pounds so I can quite believe this is no typo.

Not in the same league but I remember telling my buddies to help themselves to anything while they crashed at my flat. I was away working. Help themselves they did indeed... 2 bottles of VW 20YO later I wish I had kept my mouth shut!

Insult to injury I know they mixed it with coke as well. You gotta laugh I guess.

Am I alone in missing the author's connection between "bourbon fanatics" who are willing to pay ever higher prices for limited release small batch/single barrel products (the overwhelming majority of which are $60 or less even here in Oregon) and the outrageous four to five-figure prices paid for hyper-aged scotch?

Can we bourbonians really be responsible for a madness that has people waiting to pay a small fortune for a bottle of Scotch?

I wasn't sure if you meant that tongue in cheek but no harm to point out that the fashion to sell very expensive old or limited edition bottlings of malt whisky goes back many years, well before the comparatively modest price spikes of some bourbons. Personally I find with the bourbons that high expense often buys just rarity or packaging, the best bourbons are mid-priced, generally, and some are low-priced. In rye, probably the best younger rye is WT rye which is all of about $12.00. Older ryes fetch a higher price but not everyone would agree they are better...

Fool/Money/Parted. It applies to just about any unusual distilled spirit - whether it's bourbon, Scotch, vodka (!)... but sometimes it's fun to be a fool, particularly if you can afford it.

My peak of foolishness is $90-$100 for a bottle - and I've never been disappointed by said bottles (Glenrothes 1974, Ardbeg 1977, Alloa 40yo single grain).

In the bourbon/rye world, Stagg, Saz 18, Larue, and Hirsch 16 have been my most expensive bottles - and they've been worth every penny.

For everyday use, though, there are plenty of good, inexpensive things around...

$12.00 CDN? Wooooooooo! You're pretty lucky. It's about $20 US in the Chicago area (still not a bad deal, but C$12 is incredible).

Next time I'm visiting my sister, I ought to pop over the border and pay a visit to Sarnia, ON. :slappin: It's only about a couple of hours or so from Midland, MI.

I'd better take a look at what the over-1-liter duty is, though...

I can't imagine 38 K being a typo, yes, its a very high figure, but I think there are people who'd pay that much for some MaCallan from the twenties. I'm sure if I won the powerball, I'd pick up a few bottles for everyone here.

Crispy, I meant $12.00 U.S. This is based on Kentucky prices (say, $12-$15). Even at $20 it is well worth the purchase but e.g. I doubt it is above $15 at Liquor Barn in Louisville.

Here in Sweden, this is standard pricing for bottlings like that. We´re used to being skinned! :grin:

I bought my Ardbeg -77 in England but had it ever been available in Sweden, it might even have been more expensive, possibly in the $110-120 league.

I'm impressed that you guys can get Ardbeg '77s for around $120. Where? I haven't seen any 70s Ardbeg's for less than $200-250, whether here in the US or abroad in Scotland/England.

That's like putting a glass of bourbon inside a Lamborghini and then selling it for 500k and saying it's the most expensive liquor ever sold.

this is a total marketing hype for a new line. I guess it was a good idea as it's getting lots of press for the company.
