JD and Ebay

I know quite a few of here are on EBAY:skep: Has anyone else ever noticed the insane price's, bottles of JD go for? When I get stuff from on EBAY its for drinking. Some stuff can only be had on EBAY and I want to try as many different whiskey's from all different decades. The bottles of JD are just that, JD. Are JD drinkings so desperate for something new that they will go and spend hundred's on different bottles of the same stuff. I wont lie when I say that I do have all the current bottles of JD in my bar (Green, #7, Single Barrel, Gentleman Jack and Silver Select). I enjoy the occasional pour of them but they are all pretty much the same flavor. So why do JD drinkers go crazy for BOTTLES:slappin:

Many of the JD bottles on ebay are 86 or 90 proof, strengths that are no longer made. Many JD items are sold to bidders overseas. I know of several big time JD collectors who live in Germany and the Netherlands. They collect everything JD, not just the whiskey bottles but also the coolers, advertising, store displays, glasses etc.

Tom is dead on. I met a guy in Lynchburg last year that has one of the largest collections I have ever seen. He wants everything from coasters to matchbooks to old bottles, whatever.

Additionally, there are small, subtle differences in the various versions..For example I am not a big fan of Gentleman Jack as I think its too sweet.

Many of the Jack Daniels bottles have had different labels over the years. Collectors of JD memorabilia are fanatics about collecting all the variations of these items. I have seen minis that had a black and white tax stamp over the neck with a picture of Jack Daniels on the stamp and these are big sellers. Also, the green label minis haven't been made since 1986 and also are heavy sellers. Even minis with variations of back labels are very sought after. If it is a JD item and it has some sort of variation to it, chances are that there is a competitive market for it!

It also has 6 days left, it's only at $50, I wouldn't be surprised if it tripled/quadrupled in price.

Keeping in mind these bottles are easier to find in the US, I recently sold 3 bottles from the Gold Medal series to a guy for $1000 (about US$750) . I think it was the 1904, 1913 and 1914. I got $1850 (approx US$1400) for the set of 7 Gold medal bottles. Starting to wish I had more.......

More and more people are buying these sorts of bottles as 'investments'. It is amazing what sort of short term returns you can get for them. It's where I get my bourbon money from.......
