TimmyBoston
What is your favorite pour for a nightcap? What's that last drink you'd like to have before bedtime? I very often will have a drink immediately before bed to help ease myself off to sleep. Sometimes I like a hot toddy, sometimes a pour of an Islay Scotch, sometimes a pour of a gentle bourbon. What are your favorites? Also does anyone have an interesting Hot Toddy recipe they'd like to share?

thehighking
I think Basil Hayden's makes a perfect nightcap pour, or a nice Lowland scotch like Rosebank.
hollywood
I like all my favorite pours at anytime!, however sometimes I like some coffee before going to bed (Is that strange?!). With this coffee some irish cream often hits the spot. H'wood
ratcheer
I'm not much of a nightcap guy, but the best one I ever remember was Blanton's, straight in a crystal snifter.Tim
photogjunkie
For me...it would have to be a Van Winkle product to send me gently off into the world of dreams.

cowdery
When I was married my wife made a hot toddy for me and she was under the impression that the water had to be really, really hot for it to work. No real damage was done when I tried to sip it but, "here, drink this boiling water" became a standing joke with us.

Gillman
Complex mixture of 20+ bourbons and ryes and red vermouth mixture, about 2:1. Seemed a little grainy and rich (too sweet from whiskey and vermouth) so a light dash of vodka went in for display. Remarkable how the vodka fixed the drink, it became (I know I keep saying this) the best Manhattan I ever had. My vermouth combo has some Cinzano in it which adds a pleasing cinammon-like topnote.Gary
T47
Oops...The recipe actually calls for 1 or 2 pads of butter and I did only use one...She also had some interesting ideas about Julep Toddys...using mint tea? Here is the article.
shaggy
That's a great article. I remember getting hot toddies when i was sick as a child. My dad would put some bourbon in a skillet with honey, butter, and squeeze of lemon. He would boil a pot of water and pour a little bit into a coffee mug and add the contents of the skillet. I would breathe deep over the cup several times and sip from the mug. Things got hazy after that. I usually fell asleep for the night and woke up with less congestion. If I needed a quick dose of cough medicine he would break out the half pint of peach schnapps and let me have a swig straight from the bottle. It is weird to have such good memories from being sick. I sort of feel a cold coming on now I think tonight might be hot toddy time. I am going to try it with Beam Rye and local honey....
jspero
No nightcaps for me, thanks.Late night drinking screws up my sleep worse than late night eating screws up my esophageal sphincter....JeffSame here (well, about the drink, not the sphinc). If I drink too close to when I go to sleep, I wake up a lot and generally don't sleep well at all. I find an hour is a good time in between my last drink and going to sleep. I have no idea why, but there you have it.Jay
