Help needed

I am going out of town this coming weekend (8/11) to visit a good friend. I'm looking for suggestion for a good whiskey to take to him. He is a big fan of Crown Royale. I've tried in the past, without success (too sweet), to interest him in some top shelf bourbons. Does anyone have suggestions for a rye or other high-end pour that would be a good transition from his usual Crown?

Pappy Van Winkle 15 (or, if you have it, ORVW 15)? OGD 114? Stagg (any version)? Buffalo Trace?

Or, a rye - Rittenhouse BIB, WT Rye, Saz Jr., Saz 18?

All of these, at least to me, tend more towards spicy than simple sweetness.

I don't know Crown Royal myself, so take this with a grain of salt.

J'B', IMO Maker's Mark is most similar to blended whiskey that I have found. I guess it is its mild, sweetness that gives me that impression. My each experience with Maker's always leaves me with the impression that I have just sampled the blended stuff. H'wood

A good friend would let him have his Crown Royal. If you're afraid you'll have to drink it with him, take some bourbon in a flask for yourself.

Take him a bottle of the upscale Crown and he will be very happy. Much easier than trying to get him to drink something he may not like.

I'm not trying to have him drink something we won't like... I'm trying to find another Canadian or rye that is close to Crown that he might like.

Sorry, I might have stated that a little wrong, however the Crown Reserve is quite nice and not something that many Crown drinkers will treat themselves to. I used to quite like CC 12yo, but it's been a while since I last tried it. Basil Hayden might be a good choice here, being lower in proof like many of the Canadians as well as having a good percentage of rye and a nice middle-of-the-road age statement.

hey jb, my opinion is that Tangle Ridge and Can. Club 12yr are very fine whiskeys. Also, if you can find the C.C. 15 yr it is very smooth. The 12yr is rich and robust while T R is mostly a rye so its got a bit of spice to it. Have a great visit.
