gothbat
When I was at Dave and Busters this weekend I noticed a glass that I have never seen before. It was small, like a shot glass but it was shaped like an hour glass with an open top. The bottom was a small chamber, then the middle was a lot thinner, and the top of the glass opened up again. I didn’t get a chance to ask what it was but the people I saw drinking from them were drinking some green stuff out of them. Does anyone know what this glass is called, what it’s used for, and where I could buy one online? It looks like it might be good for bourbon although it is a bit small. I did a few google searches but was unable to come up with anything. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. I don't know what it is but I know I want one. barturtle
I used to work at a bar that had glasses that very much fit that description, these had short stems though. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who made them, but IIRC the shape is referred to as a thistle. These were of about a 6oz capacity, and we did use them for whiskies exclusively. hollywood
From your description it sounds like the same glasses that came with a Jack Daniel's gift set that I received a number of years back. These "shotglasses" were supposed to be used as "chasers"....The idea was to pour your mixer in first on the bottom (this area slightly larger than the top), and then add your whiskey in on top of the mixer. Their was a slight mixing of the two, but if drank quickly pretty much served the purpose. H'wood
gothbat
Did some googling and hollywood got it with the chaser glasses. Found a cheap pair of similar glasses and ordered them on ebay. Can't wait to try them with some beer in the bottom chamber and some bourbon in the top. I also took a look at the thistle glasses and found a few that I really liked. Unfortunately they were about $50 each (they were crystal) so I don't think I'll be getting them anytime soon. Thanks alot for the info guys! gothbat
I received the glasses today and minutes ago I tried one of them out with one of my favorite ales and some good bourbon. Design wise the glasses were the same as the ones they had at Dave and Busters but they were not as proportional. The chaser portion, imo, was too big and the shot section was slightly too small. It’s a pretty cool idea but I wish the bottom was smaller and the top a tad bigger. Is the entire glass supposed to be swallowed in one swig with a glass such as this? OneCubeOnly
Try an eBay search for "quaffer"...it looks like the whiskey-to-chaser ratio can vary quite a bit.
