Jefferson Reserve 15 Year

I happened to notice this bourbon on the PA Wine and Spirits web site and was wondering if anyone's tried it.

The review they post on PAW&S makes it sound very tasty.

If you use the search function you'll find a number of threads on Jeffersons Reserve. I'll leave it to you to form an opinion based on them, however, that is a good price since it tends to run in the $50+ range elsewhere. That is, assuming that it is the Very Old(or the now defunct 15yo) and not the younger version.

Here is my opinion of it from days gone by. Of course, I later came to appreciate the other bourbon I spoke of disparagingly in the same post. Perhaps if someone were to give me a bottle of JR now, I'd find that I like it, after all. However, I won't spend my own money to find out.

Be a bit skeptical. Although I DO still find some Jefferson's Reserve 15yo (with a glass-bulb stopper) occasionally, it hasn't been made for some years. The current rendition is "Very Old" Jefferson's Reserve (with a wooden stopper), with whiskey ranging from 12 to 17 years old (probably most on the young end of that range).

Unless stores have old stock, my guess would be they never changed the old listing when the new version arrived.

There are some batches of the 15 yr old with wooden stoppers.

Also, I do have to agree with the majority of people here, the 12-17 yr old current version is not worth the money IMHO.

I think the consensus has it that the 15 is better than the 12-17, in what I have read.

I recently opened a bottle of the 15 yo. A fine pour, nicely balanced and very drinkable. I'd rate it a very good.

Trey Zoeller, who owns Jefferon's Reserve, is one of the worst people in the industry in terms of spouting a bunch of phony crap about "his" distillery and its heritage when his products are simply bulk bourbon, acquired on the spot market, and bottled by KBD. When he actually says something that's true, it's about the old Willett Distillery, which is where KBD has its bottling plant. I have also heard that he is in partnership with the Kulsveens in their long, so far unsuccessful effort to start making whiskey again.

Zoeller created his brands when there was still a lot of good, old whiskey available at a good price. That situation has now changed. There is very little old whiskey available on the spot market and if you can find any that meets your age requirements, you have to take what you can get.

I try not to beat up on these guys unnecessarily, as everybody has a right to try to make a living, but I like to mention from time to time why I have no interest in this category of whiskeys.
