I sit and wonder sometimes. It's not a living, but it's fun.

What I find myself wondering now and again when I look at a bottle of Old Grand-Dad BIB is, How much longer? Old Charter 12yo, how much longer?

Weller 12 year old, too late, it's already started to happen. Eagle Rare 101, way too late it's already happened. Russell's Reserve 101, too late it's already happened.

What I'm talking about (wondering about) is are these going to go away or in some cases be reinvented at a higher price with a new label?

I'll miss my OGD BIB.

I've never had OGD BIB, would you recommend it? Do you put it in the same league as the others you just mentioned? I'm not a big fan OGD 114.

I put OGD BIB in my "it's a BIG bargain for the price catagory" plus it's widely available. However, if you don't like OGD 114, you're probably not going to like the BIB. For under $20, in my mind it's worth a try. I like the BIB a lot.

OGD BIB is also a very good choice for cocktails. If someone were to ask for a recommendation for just one "reasonably priced" bourbon to keep in their bar, I'd say it or WT 101. Probably WT if they expect more neat drinkers, OGD if they expect more mixers.

But then again, maybe you shouldn't listen to me; I'm a big fan of OGD 114.

P.S. And I'd put it basically in the class of those listed, but wouldn't rank it on top. Not on bottom either.

Haven't been able to find it for quite some years, the point may be moot.

My God......Even Pennsylvania carries this one. Go figure.

I like OGD BIB a lot. I put it in the WT 101/Weller 12 category as a good bourbon selling at a surprisingly low price for the quality. Having said that, it's very rye heavy...if you're not into that, you might not think too highly of it.

I love Rye heavy Bourbons, just not OGD 114. If I see it at a bar I'll give it a try. I don't need anymore 'cocktail' bourbons at home as I have a few already and rarely drink cocktails at home!

Your kidding me right? Have you been in a Bevmo lately? It's just about every where I go... I don't think this one is going anyway!

But about that Weller 12...... Good grief that is one butt ugly new bottle!!! What the F were they thinking!?!?! If I ever buy one it's most likely going into an older bottle and that thing is getting beaten over a coworker's head until it breaks.

Not discountinued, but the point of this thread was...I wonder if marketing will take this and others like it out of the picture. Either completly discontinued, or diluted and reintroduced at a higher price, or just plain reintroduced with a different name and the price raised.

Weller 12yo new bottle/new price

Russell's Reserve new bottle/new proof/new price

Eagle Rare new bottle/new proof/new price (or you could say just completely discontinued and replaced with)

I've often worried about that as to OGD 114. I don't know whether to be happy about the relative "bust" of BH for keeping the mashbill's profile down or fear that the "bust" will give Beam a reason to pull the mashbill, or at least be reluctant to try anything like an older 114. I'm sure the OGD line is profitable as is, and I guess we should just hope it stays a little under their radar. And in our bunkers.

I worry about the OC 12 too. As it appears that age = inventory tax, it's not surprising that a 12 year at under $20 is an anomaly in the market.

When someone asks me what (less-expensive) bourbons to start with, I tell them OGD BIB and Weller 107. One rye, one wheat, both higher-proof in the classical sense, both expressive.

In my glass right now is a ND-era (late '80s) OGD BIB. Beautiful, supple leather and spice (more leather and spice than a lot of current-era straight ryes), with just a lingering dark-honeyness to tell you it's bourbon and not rye.
