Laying to rest a bottle of WT 12 split label. I'm sad. Some of the best whisk(e)y I have ever tasted. There's only about a half ounce left in the glass and none in the bottle.

I'm glad I decided to have the bit of VWSR12 I had left after an earlier taste as a nightcap. The small amount that was left was delicious but would have made a disappointing pour.

michter's unblended straight whiskey...the sadness of that one going empty was equal to the more recent RR90...both of these went down so well, so smooth, challenging enough in that split second between nose and taste...

...but my cognitive ability to further analyze were simply (and compassionately) cut off and i was left with the simple satisfaction of enjoying the experience of the finish...both were long and lingering!:grin:

of course, that's from one bottle of each. neither is quite inexpensive, so i can't afford to just grab more...so there is melancholy...:rolleyes:

(at least the michter's is available in PA...but it's often already off the shelf every time i try to buy one. and it's on sale this month for $4 off!).

i hope to find something new to enjoy and regret its eventual passing...

hoping to get the Michter's Bourbon this time...never had it (or the truly expensive Rye)

Today I put to rest a simple bottle of Buffalo Trace. So sad to see it go it was a very nice pour. Oh well the replacement bottle is OGD 114. My smile has returned!

Did the same with a BT recently... one of my "daily pours" so it will be replaced. Allways good; never disappointing.

Some goods friends and neighbors brought home their adopted daughter from Guatemala this weekend. What a sweetheart! All of us in the cul-de-sac got together to celebrate and killed a bottle of PVW 23 and most of a WTAS.

Hard to think of a better occasion....

As I know not when I will gather again with the faithful in Bardstown (or elsewhere), and I have too many bottles with too little whiskey left in them, I've decided to 'retire' them semi-systematically in lieu of risking however-rare oxygenation in the near-empty bottles. Most have been open more than a year already. They are myriad, so it will take me a while to warrant opening another 'new' bottle.

The bad news is, of course, that many are irreplaceable. On the other hand, the good news is that most are incredible bourbons/whiskeys, or at the very least, distinctive and interesting. The majority are both.

My plan is to find the bottle with the lowest fill, and drink it until it's empty, then move on the the next one in the same fashion. Fortunately (for me, at least), that means I'll be enjoying tonight the final 25ml or so of my Van Winkle trade for some barrel-proof "Pappy", or 21yo Old Fitzgerald/Stitzel-Weller distillate:

Hey TNBourbon, I take it that the whole time you are clearing your house of opened/empty bottles you will be continuing to bring home as many new bottles as possible to keep your stash up? That is at least what I have done with my small bunker 'o' booze. Hats off to your 21 year S-W OF.

No, I've already pretty much stopped doing that. I'm only buying things I'll drink myself and/or never see again (and like). My purpose is to get inventory down to only bottles I plan to open soon.

Tonight's entrant in the Empty-a-Bottle Sweepstakes is Old Grand-Dad Bottled In Bond, distilled in Spring 1957 (not just birthyear, but birth season!) and bottled in Fall 1961 (as Maris topped 60, and Norm Cash finished swatting .361). It's a fairly deep pour, so am just going to enjoy it over the next while as I read the WSJ and whatever else finds my lap. Orange drizzle over spice cake -- a pretty typical ND OGD profile. But I've seen 12yos not as dark as this youngster.

Old Heaven Hill Very Rare Bottled In Bond 10yo (aka, VROHH BIB). This is a marvel -- a versatile whiskey that is tasty neat, relatively undiluted (at 100 proof) over ice, and a great mixer. $13.50 per 750ml, only in Kentucky (generally).

Don't return home without it. Thanks to some KY friends, I have backup, thankfully.

My bottle of AAA 10 yr. gave its last pour. I can not believe this great bourbon is as inexpensive as it is. I will not forget to replace this as soon as possible.

BTW, anyone else have trouble parting with empties? My bar storage shelves are getting cluttered!!

We have so many bottles open to choose from that I very rarely toss one in the recycling bin....this week was the exception. Pappy 15 and a gold foil Hirsch.

Me too as I'm too busy opening up new ones (Four Roses 40th and Wild Turkey American Spirit this weekend) that I seldom put one out to pasture.

However, a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 SB bit it this weekend!

Finished off a 2006 GTS in anticipation of opening a 2007.

Well actually, I didn't finish it.... the final pour (about 1.5 ounces) looked like a dissolved charcoal briquette from all the char. I know others here have raved about "Stagg droppings" but all I could do was a little sip. My tongue ended up all black and gritty.

I guess I'm gross because the last pour or two from a bottle of Stagg with all those "droppings" makes for a nice accompaniment to a steak, charred on the outside and bright pink in the middle. MMMM extra char.

Tonight, my Lot B and Binny's honey barrel Baby Saz each yielded one last generous pour. It's going to be time to pop open one of my new BTACs soon... or maybe one of last year's. Decisions, decisions!

I've taken to giving a good swirl to unfiltered bottles like Stagg before pouring, to evenly distribute the char. Even so, I've liked "charcoal-grilled" pours of Stagg when I've had them.

Well I did not plan on drinking tonight but my first bottle of Four Roses 40th 15-1C bit the dust. I hated to see it go but it was a good one. Looks Like I get to open a new bottle now YAAHOOOOOO! What will be next???
