...If it get stuck, I'm confindent that my SB friends will talk me through it.

Well, Chuck, I read somewhere that "Whiskey don't keep!".

I also figure if the value of a bottle matters to me, I'd better keep it sealed -- because once I've opened it, it ain't worth nothing except for drinkin'.

A bottle of Buffalo Trace single-barrel selected by Everett's in South Beloit, IL. I like BT, but I like some of the older expressions of that mash bill better. It is, however, a very good signature whiskey for that distillery. Buffalo Trace bourbon is, definitively, Buffalo Trace bourbon.

Said goodbye to Weller Special Reserve. Good bourbon at a special price.

I finished off a FR:SB this weekend. While I still don't know whether the guy at the liquor store was right about it (I was getting the Small Batch and he talked me into the Single Barrel saying the $10 difference was well worth it.) I must say I really enjoyed it. Definitely one of the sweetest bourbons I've ever had, somewhat unique to me as it was very mellow with a strong smell and taste of honey. However it compares to the other I'll definitely be buying this one again when I come across it, I just hope my next one isn't different, this being a single barrel and all.

Finished up a bottle of Blantons over the weekend. It was a very good bottle, dry but still with a underlying sweetness. Sorry to see it go.

Recently:

  • W.L. Weller 12yo
  • Dickel #12 90-proof (thanks, Gary!)
  • El Dorado 12yo demerara rum
  • Planter's Gold Pyrat's X.O. rum

I have a number of near-empty bottles, so that I can empty 2-3 weekly for awhile. Am weighing that option vs. sharing with others. Bottom line might be whether or not I've already offered it for sharing...

Tim with your typical generosity, you would think of sharing them with others, but ( I say) drink them.

I have a bottle of the same El Dorado 12, to which I added a couple of ounces of El Dorado 15 and a little each of Angostura 1824 from Trinidad and Tobago and XM Royal Extra Mature from Demerara.

So, it is all aged Demerara rum except for the Trinidad and Tobago one, but the latter has a similar taste to some aged Demerara (or elements therein), so it all works well.

The result is so good I won't alter it any further - unusually for me. The ED 15 just deepens and dries slightly the ED 12, but the vatting maintains the profile of ED 12 because ED 15 is quite similar. The Angostura 1824 and XM Royal Mature add deep, well-oaked rum notes, with some pot still rubber from the Angosture 1824. Since flavors similar to these two are already present in the vatting, adding a little more just makes it better.

Very fine rum, I'll bring it to Sampler with my vatting of all 80/86 proof ND OTs from the late 70's/early 80's.

Gary, it was your recommendation that led me, rightly, to the El Dorado 12yo vs. the 15. (The 15yo is still available to me, and I might yet succumb, just because...). I mostly blended the Angostura 1919 (8 years), and at almost double the price, am unlikely to assay the 12yo 1824.

I find the 'juicy fruit' Planter's/Pyrat X.O. a wonderful 'value' premium rum at c. $35. Similarly, the ED 5yo c. $20. Alas, fine rums are more limited here than to you, apparently. Either that, or I'm not informed enough to know what I see on shelves.

I fully enjoyed your last rum vatting left with me, Gary, so look forward to more.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I have too many open bottles (for me).

I emptied a Blanton's Gold tonight, but I will empty a couple more bottles (not tonight!) before I open something I have yet to try.

Forgot to post.....

Last weekend I finished a bottle of Wild Turkey Rye as well as the bottle of Buffalo Trace I purchased from Harrods in London back in 2004...

Finally finished off my Stagg from last year. I've already put a good dent in this year's first bottle. My friends seem to like to try this stuff!

Ridgemont Reserve and OGD 114. Two very different bottles, and both will be replaced. I find Ridgemont Reserve a very comforting pour that has been hitting the spot the last few months. Much more mellow than the bottles I tend to enjoy. OGD 114, well that's just packed full of flavor.

Recently:

Weller Centennial 13 yr - got 1 more gonna get more

VWFR 'Lot B' - nice but a little too sweet and low proof for me lately

Vatted the rest of a Jim Beam Black with a EC18 to make space.... still tastes too woody for my liking.

Going on a big run this weekend to bolster the troops downstairs.

Last night finished a bottle of Saz 18. It's been sitting there with a couple of ounces for a while. I guess I was avoiding it because I only have one bottle left and am not optimistic about finding any more. It'll probably be some time before I open it.

Weekend before last a liquor store manager (one who I believe know's what he's talking about) told me that Oregon will not receive any 2008 BTAC unless sales of BT (the bourbon by that name, not any BT brand) reach some minimal threshold level. No way to know if that's going to happen.

Woodford Reserve. Maybe revisiting this bottle answers why it has taken so long to empty....

Jameson 12yo, an older bottling/label (c. late-'80s, early-'90s). Much more copper influence than more recent issues, which leads me to wonder if it wasn't early after a re-coppering -- with today's bottles from a more-scoured pot still.

Anyway, it was an interesting stylistic note, not the prominent sense in so aged a whiskey, so not nearly distracting and offensive as an American distiller's recent 'copper-kettle' bottling.
