I emptied six bottles today.

I haven't had anything to drink though. I vatted a bunch of bottles that had had just a little bit left in them for a long time.

Evan Williams 7 yo

Old Charter 12 yo

Johnny Drum 12 yo

OGD 86 proof

Knob Creek

Jim Beam Rye.

This filled an old Eagle Rare 101 bottle to just under the fill line. That is nice because I will be able to add a bit of whatever it seems to need after I taste it.

Ed, if you don't get a good result, try waiting until the level is about 60% of the bottle (or a little more, up to about 70%) and top up with one bourbon. Often I find this results in an excellent blend. Adding that much more of a last bourbon (I am assuming the other components were roughly equal in contribution) seems to bring the blend into alignment. I just did this using WT 80 as my top-up although my base was composed of many more whiskeys than yours (about 20). I got a seamless bourbon of good natural, dry character which I use for neat sampling or cocktails. You want something relatively uncomplex for this purpose although the main point I think is its preponderance compared to the other elements. Some times it works the other way around, e.g. 60% WT 80, 40% a complex mix. The mix seems to act as a "seasoning".

Said so long to a long-lingering bottle of Hirsch 16. (sigh) All the hype and mystery aside, this is still one damn good whiskey.

A WTRR 90, no problem replacing that...BUT

The first of the '06 BTAC has met it's demise. Saz 18 joined the ranks of the departed and although another may be found...it will be missed.

I finished off a couple of bottles last night.

First, a bottle of Olde Saint Nick Winter Rye 101 proof. It had been a while since I had this. I was really impressed with this last night.

Second, I finished off a bottle of Evan Williams SB. I don't remeber what year it was and can find the bottle. It is a good pour but I like the EW 12 and the EW 15 much better.

Last weekend I finished off a bottle of Old Weller Antique. A good pour, but one I won't replace soon. I want to try Weller 12 again. I think I liked it better. Also, ORVW 10 is more to my taste.

Also recently emptied was a bottle of Rare Perfection Rye 11 year old. I really liked that and will get it again someday, if I see it at an affordable price.

There's no more GTS on the bar now, I just poured out the last of my '05. The only thing worse that finishing off a good bottle is doing so and realizing you have less than you normally pour for yourself. Then again, it's 141.2 proof so it will probably last almost as long.

I couldn't agree more. The other day when I finished off the EWSB I poured my normal pour. Then I noticed that the whiskey left in the bottle wasn't going to make a good last pour so I emptied it into my glass. A little later I looked down at my glass and it was a pretty big glass of bourbon. Maybe there had been enough for a good pour...

OFBB fall 1990. This one seemed a little dry but still very enjoyable. I will miss it.

When I fall off the wagon, I do it in a big way. After being "laid up" for about a month. I needed to make up for lost time. I really need some support here:grin:. Not necessarily help, I think I am doing fine reducing the number off bottles in the liquor cabinet, just some support for some empty gems.

Willets Rye 22yo, bottle 148; Riitenhouse Rye BiB (No designation on where it was distilled) label must have fallen off during shipment. ; Wild Turkey Rye; Pappy 20yo (green Glass); George T Stagg 141.2 proof; Wild Turkey Tribute 15yo bottle #0903; EWSB 1996 Barreled 2/19/96 ( Sammy Talarico's 40th birthday), Barrel #4, Bottled 11/11/05; FRSB Warehouse LW, barrel 11-5M; Old Heaven Hill Very Rare 10yo BiB, DSP 31; and AAA 10yo. It is funny but more than half of them are corked bottles.

Sheesh! And here I was all excited to post about my ONE bottle of Rittenhouse BIB I finished off last night (which I incidentally got from you).

[goes off to a corner mumbling something about "damn showoffs"...]

Howie,

Those are some mightly fine, albeit, empty bottles. Tell me, how did you like the Tribute? I have an unopened bottle right now. I was thinking about heading into D.C. to Bourbon's (www.bourbondc.com) since they have that on their top shelf menu right now. Now I see why you're looking for another Pappy 15.....yours is empty! Try calling the two stores I mentioned in Frederick and If you can't locate a local Pappy, try Shoppersvineyard.com, I think they have it for around $45.

My Saz Jr. recently bit the dust. Soon to go are a Dickel #12 and my Fleischmann's Rye. With the latter running low, I have an excuse for a little "hunting trip" to Wisconsin.

I have a Binny's ETL about ready to go, which I only just bought at the end of February. It got me thinking that how long it takes me to finish a bottle, at least when there is no obstacle to replacement, might tell me something. I may add an "empty" field to my whiskey purchases database.

Good idea, Chuck. I don't keep such a database, and I'm beginning to think it would be wise. Whenever I get it running, an "empty" field will be included.

On to empty bottles:

Last night, my ND OGD 114 bought the farm. There are two (or is it three?) more in reserve, though. Still, sad to see it go.

I also finished off a 7yr/90 proof Evan Williams black this week. Again, not an expensive bottle, but difficult to replace.

Goodbye to a 2001 ER 17... is it my imagination or were the older version of this pour much better than the recent iterations?

A bottle of Beam Black gave up its last yesterday, and an Ardbeg 10 that I've been revisiting lately will be the next to go.

Well, the only ER 17 I've had has been the '06 version - but I have absolutely no complaints about it.

Over the weekend I laid to rest a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel, a Lot B and 3/4 of a ORVW 10yr/107. Oaks and Derby were not kind to my wallet but, as always, the bourbon was fantastic.

  • 2 weeks later...

Opened a bottle of WLW 2006 to share with good friends and neighbors while watching the Preakness. My horses finished in the money.

Stayed long after the race and after the sun went down. The WLW is no more. But it was worth it.... a very good time was had by all. Great bourbon and great friends!

  • 1 month later...

Blue-wax Hirsch 16. The last three or so ounces have been sitting in the bottle for awhile now. Didn't want it to go bad.

Hmmm -- very vanilla/characteristic nose. Tastes like pretty good bourbon, too. I guess it would have lasted a day or two longer. Oh, well...

My bottle of Jefferson's Reserve recently bit the dust. I kept the cork to keep the memory alive.

Joining the ranks of the honored dead is an I W Harper Gold Medal. I surprised myself with how fast I drank this bottle. I have open bottles that rarely merit a pull, but the Harper is smooth and balanced and went zippity do-dah.

Time to pull a new one from the bunker.

Rittenhouse BIB...been a very nice bottle. I wish this one (like many others) were more readily available around WA.

My Four Roses Single Barrel gave up its last pour tonight. R.I.P.

I think I'll open up my recent Pappy 15 tomorrow night.
