My Weller Antique gave up its last two pours tonight, and my AAA 10 year is running low, too.

Didn't empty a bottle tonight, but rather a quite-good decanter of several vatted (a la Gary Gillman) rums I have/have had. I poured the last 1-1/2 oz. or so -- straining the cork particles -- into a large brandy snifter, and filled with caffeine-free diet cola (generic). Didn't have quite enough 'oomph', so I added a bit from a Pusser's Navy Rum 95.5-proof 1.75L ceramic jug I have open. Good, simple drink.

Rum was my first liquor love -- way back before health problems intermittently precluded alcohol consumption. I still enjoy it. Sorry to see the decanter empty, but much enjoyed its contents.

Finished off a bottle of Rittenhouse rye BIB. definately need to get another. Very good stuff for about ten bucks. Oh well another trip to the liquer store.

VBT 68 was finished off tongiht, er this morning, OF BiB faux Strip from mid 80s went bye bye. Good thing I know where several more are. Oh, well at least I once knew, you just never know anymore in SoCal with all the hunters and ebay poachers that are around now...

Finished off a Weller Antique, it was one of those last pours where you find that there was only about ½ of what you normally pour yourself. Afterwards I had some WT KS, after I filled my snifter I looked at the bottle and realized that it would be the same situation as the Weller Antique on the next pour so I finished the WT KS as well. Even though it doesn’t affect the taste of the bourbon I find it to be disappointing when the last pour in one of my bottles is less than what I normally give myself. Both bottles will be replaced at some point but I’m thinking my next WT will be RB.

Henry McKenna Single Barrel (10 yr. old BIB).... Honestly didn't know I had this. Somehow it got moved to a lower shelf in the cabinet beneath my bar.

A very nice, balanced pour... certainly among the best of the HH crowd. I'm going to have to look for a replacement for this and give it the attention it deserves.

Rock Hill Farms. The arrival of a new bottle, all the way from the Atlantic coast, takes the pain out of emptying this one.

Is anyone else as fascinated as I by the hollow stopper? I wish there were a way to extract the stopper while full of bourbon without spilling any. I don't know why.

This is a bottle that's hard to part with, even when it's empty. I think it's one of the most beautiful bourbon bottles on the market.

I think I'll keep this one just in case I have to decant a cracked bottle sometime. Of course there's always the risk I'll be tempted to use it for illicit purposes, such as seeing whether a few drops of EC 18 will add body to, say, OGD BIB without overwhelming the rye zest of the base.

Damn! Now I'm channeling Gillman. :shocked: :grin:

Thanks, Dave, and of course there is nothing illicit about it. Unconventional is perhaps more the idea, but many here I think now regularly experiment in such directions. Indeed what you suggested sounds like an excellent idea.

(It is not even unconventional, really, since many distillers mingle liquors to attain a certain profile, and middlemen used to do it, especially in the pre-1919 liquor industry, using products from different sources).

I meant "illicit" only in regard to the way the good folks at Buffalo Trace might regard it, inasmuch as I have no plan to peel off the Rock Hill Farms label.

Then again, I almost never serve bourbon to others, so it doesn't really matter. I won't get confused regarding the contents.

Sometimes I do this in the full bottle, and re-label with my own notation to keep an accurate record what is in it. More often I make these combinations in the glass. That way, failures need not be repeated. Although, few mixtures of whiskeys - at least North American whiskeys - can really go wrong. They are enough of a piece to make usually an interesting mingling. And if things really do not turn out right, they always make an excellent Manhattan.

Actually I experimented with water as I was rinsing the empty bottle and discovered something interesting.

The neck of the hollow stopper is so narrow that surface tension will hold the water in, save for a few drops.

However, that all but rules out drinking from the stopper, which is one idea I had been toying with.

Nothing monumental, but JTS Brown BIB hit the recycle bin tonight. Here in WA it sells for $13.00. This bottle was a surprise for me. I know I got more than $13 worth of enjoyment from it, for me the best of the lower price bottles I have tried.

HH does make an affordable Bib. I wish some of them made it to Texas. My fav is Dowlings Deluxe 8yr Bib $13/lt.

The Wife and I finished off a bottle of Maker's Mark. It wasn't my first choice but when you are on vacation and out of Bourbon you can't get to picky. Very good pour this one was however some glass time and a swirl seemed to help it out. Other wise the nose was full of rubbing alcohal. Once that was burned out the taste of carmel and vanilla shined through along with fresh rasberries and almonds. The finish was sometime hot. this all went down at Devils Lake WI. Made for a delightful afternoon/picnic. Oh well another one bites the dust. Mourning is over as a bottle PVW lot B is in my future.

In anticipation of the 2007 release, I drank the last pour of a bottle of OFBB 2006. Wow! Great stuff! Rich and very rewarding...
