Back in August, I was watching the single barrel bottling room on the BT webcam as I occasionally do. I zoomed in on what barrels were being dumped that day and noticed that they were Old Fitzgerald (SW) barrels.....one was almost 16yo and the other 17yo. I assumed it might be Pappy 15 single barrel bottlings. No....these two old SW barrels from 1989 and 1990 were being mingled to produce a bottling of Weller 12yo.....yes, Weller 12yo from 16 and 17yo SW whiskey. WTF.....this is what many SB'ers have been looking to do with BT but they say they don't have older SW barrels available. Anyway....here it was. It was finally delivered to the retailer who put this together and a local SB'er has acquired nine cases of it. I received a few today....hence the posting.

Weller 12yo from a mingling of two barrels of SW whiskey...1989 & 1990

Price $15.99

Darker than the standard Weller 12yo......just as one would expect

Nose has the cotton candy I find in many late SW bottlings including Julian's.

Nose elements carry through to the tongue. No woodiness at all to me. Some pie spice. Rich and satisfying but not as complex as I find the Van Blankle (a VWSR 12yo Lot B SB I did several years ago).

Finish is smooth and semi long.

A very fine whiskey at an incredible price....although once we bought our 9 cases, the store owner raised it to $24.99....still a bargain.

Another SB'er called it "Pappy 20 at a Beam Black price". This will be a hit at many future Gazebo tables for sure.

They still had some of the SW Weller 12 as of a few days ago, and plenty of the Weller Special Reserve Everett's Selection Single Barrel for 11.98. They also have a Buffalo Trace Everett's Selection Single Barrel for 19.99, in both 750 ml and 1.75 L.

They have a good stock of the 2005 Antique Collection Eagle Rare 17, Sazerac Rye 18 and William LaRue Weller, at 49.99 for the Weller and 46.99 for the ER and Saz. They don't have the 06 Antiques yet. They have a Pappy 20 for 120.00 or 130.00 (I don't remember).

Although they don't ship, I mention all of this because they are very convenient to Interstate 90/39, spitting distance from the Illinois-Wisconsin state line, and I know we have quite a few participants in the region. It's a nice store, good everything selection, well-stocked, nice people. Brian, the father, wasn't there. Bryan, the son, is in the picture. They give a 5% discount off your whole wine and spirits purchase after you buy any 12 bottles.

I qualified.

They are now on the radar. Their lives will never be the same.

That's the Bryan I talked to when I was there. I purchased three bottles of Stagg, one was a 2004 release. And of course I was there to pick up the Weller that was ordered by other members of the forum here.

Since I know Bryan is now reading this.....I'd just like to comment that because of your sales to us, your personal selection barrels are being tasted by people who truely love and appreciate the unique characteristics of bourbon. Not one of the individuals I'm associated with would buy a bunch and try to turn a personal profit (like we all see done alittle too often on ebay!) You made a good pick and I'm thankful for the opportunity to drink and share it.

i had the good fortune to talk to Bryan on the phone and I as well told him he could feel very good in knowing that this was being spread among a community of people that appreciate bourbon and do their best to help each other out. He sounded relieved, I do think he thought a few individuals were buying up tons and then Ebaying it.

My bourbon buds came over on Friday before our big party and we did a SW tasteoff that focused on the four Weller 12yo SB's we purchased last year, the Everett's bottling of Weller 12yo and the VWSR Lot B SB I purchased a couple of years ago. Although it was done blind, we drink a lot of my Lot B ("VanBlankle") and most of us picked it out on the nose alone. The average ranking of Everett's was no less than fourth out of the six and was the second pick of several.....and all these whiskeys are very fine to say the least. The Van Blankle was ranked either first or second....but it cost twice as much as the others. I personally ranked Everett's fourth........good nose, solid SW flavors and a medium long finish but found several others had richer, creamier flavors and ranked them higher. When tasting among these, the differences are often minor and, of course, a matter of personal taste.

Chuck....I assume you bought some too. What do you think of it?

You expressed my reactions very well. There's a reason it was still sitting around and BT was happy to sell it at a price so the retailer could feel good about selling it for $20 a bottle. There's a reason it isn't in Pappy 15.

At $20 it's a definite value. It's Stitzel-Weller whiskey and good. It starts clean, develops in the mouth and shows a little char on the finish. The char note probably is why they decidedit was time to let it go. It's probably as balanced as it was going to get.

I don't mean to sound like I'm damning it with faint praise. It was worth the trip.

Those barrels in the picture, by the way, are Old Fitzgerald barrels.

I tried to order some of the SW Weller 12 from Everett's. They would not ship. Will anyone who has hauled away a bunch of this stuff be willing to part with a couple of bottles? I love old SW whiskey and was frustrated when I could not buy any. If only it would have been Binny's instead. :hot:

  • 5 months later...

I've just messaged Everett's on their website to note my enjoyment of their Weller 12 bottling, and promise a visit should I find myself in their area.

Thanks, too, to Randy G. (rancastle), who provided me with a sample of the Everett's bottling. Kindness paid forward can also boomerang.
