Hell, I'd drink toilet water if I was stuck in the desert...

What defines a pinch? Some dive bar with JB and JD? Or is it a party with no bourbon period?

Parameters PLEASE!!!

Give me a minute.

I couldn't figure out a way to do it with the board's poll function so we'll do it this way. What follows is a list of "standard" American whiskeys. Your job is to rate them 1 - 4, as follows.

1 = drinkable anytime

2 = drinkable in a pinch

3 = undrinkable

4 = don't know well enough to form an opinion

Just copy the list below and add your ratings.

Jim Beam White Label

Jack Daniel's Black Label

Evan Williams Black Label

Early Times Kentucky Whisky

Old Fitzgerald Prime

Maker's Mark

Wild Turkey 101

Bulleit Bourbon

Old Grand-Dad 86 proof

George Dickel No. 12 Brand

Ten High

Buffalo Trace

Old Crow

Okay as much as I like to use JB White as my favorite whipping boy, there is not a bourbon on that list I consider undrinkable. Heck only two would be considered in a pinch.

I am going to take a different route. I'll assume that there is a shelf in my bar and that is all it contains and there will never be another shipment. What order do they disappear? (This assumes that I drink the best first and let my taste buds slowly get used to the diminished quality)

Wild Turkey 101

Jim Beam White Label

Jack Daniel's Black Label

Evan Williams Black Label

Bulleit Bourbon

Ten High

Old Crow(wonder if vatting these last two would make them better-maybe even use the ET in that vatting)

None of those bourbons or whiskeys is undrinkable! If any one considers them undrinkable I think they don't like whiskey. :)

Correct Gary. I don't like those particular whiskies and would not purchase them. That's not to say that if someone handed me a glass of the stuff I would not drink it. I just would not ask for a refill.

A whiskey I could not drink, even well-doused in a cocktail, is the current Ancient Age bourbon. It is 3 years old and very feisty in taste. The white label Heaven Hill-branded whiskey is (I find) similar. I have enormous respect for these distilleries and their many fine products, but I find those particular whiskeys very hard to get down. But that is fine, unless one can understand the full range it is hard to appreciate how good their mid-range and best really is.

Then too clearly there are consumers who enjoy the taste of such products and that is fine, taste is personal.

Yep, I will buy that. I had a buddy pick up a 375ml of it for me, because he noticed I was lacking it (for a reason). It's still full, and I intend to keep it that way...

The only thing that I have found undrinkable was Black Velvet straight and I know I have had it in a cocktail which seemed fine. I have not had (that I recall) Old Crow, Ten High, Old Fitz Prime, Early Times or Dickel #12. A few ice cubes and I am sure I could get anything down if necessary... :drinking:

Gary

I'm with Gary on this one.

Furthermore, if those were the only whiskeys left, I would NOT drink my favorites among them first, but would, instead, hold my favorites until the end, to savor the final whiskey moments with the best I had.

I, too, am in the 'nothing-is-undrinkable' crowd:

Jim Beam White Label: 2

Jack Daniel's Black Label: 2

Evan Williams Black Label: 1

Early Times Kentucky Whisky: 2

Old Fitzgerald Prime: 1

Maker's Mark: 1

Wild Turkey 101: 1

Bulleit Bourbon: 2

Old Grand-Dad 86 proof: 1

George Dickel No. 12 Brand: 1

Ten High: 2

Buffalo Trace: 1

Old Crow: 2

You can translate the above to mean: 1=drinkable neat; 2=drinkable as a mixer.

Obviously my experience levels with bottom shelf stuff is limited. On the drinkable/not drinkable issue, if JB White is the only Bourbon available (like on an airplane) I will pass. It tastes bad, gives me a headache now and a hangover later.

That's okay Doug, nice to hear from you. :)

I never said all bourbon was drinkable; I said those Chuck asked us to comment on were.

I must say Jim Beam White gave me moment for pause, but I feel it is a drinkable bourbon. I had it the other day and I thought it was better than it has been for some time. Also, well into the 80's, it was an excellent whiskey. Maybe it went through a bad patch.
