According to the International Wine and Spirit Record (IWSR),Top 10 Scotch whisky markets by volume in 2005:

1/ France

2/ US

3/ Spain

4/ UK

5/ Thailand

6/ South Korea

7/ Greece

8/ Venezuela

9/ Brazil

10/ Germany

Who would have thought the French buy more Scotch (including blends) then the US? Or that fairly small countries like Thailand and Greece would be so high in consumption.

Somehow I would´ve expected to see Japan in there, somewhere, considering their high population and perceived interest in whisky.

Greece surprised me, too. They used to be one of the poorest countries in Europe. Things must have changed in recent years, apparently.

Still, that the Greeks, with a population of 11 million should be ahead of the 80-million strong Germany seems, well, odd.

That list cant be right. I've been to Greece a handful of times. i dont see Scotch, I see plenty of Metaxa though.

Some of the countries on the list may be small, but Scotland is very small. Population is around 5 million, which is about 1/2 million more than the state of Alabama. Not very big, at all.

Yep, this is it. Scotland is not a nation in itself.

What may appear to be confusing to outsiders is that, sometimes, most notably in sports, the Scots have their own national teams. Soccer is such an example. In athletics, on the other hand, they compete for the United Kingdom.

Honestly I'm not surprised. The French have too much taste to waste their money on that overpriced caramel ridden and sugared crap that is Cognac.

They just sell it to the UK and US, and we make special edition Bourbons and Scotches, that are only available in their market.

Greece probably has more visitors each year than it had people, so that may account for some of the consumption. There is probably also a very low duty on alcohol there. Compared to other countries in the EU, Greece is still quite poor.

Greece is very poor. The average salary is 15k a year. You know, I didnt think of tourism. Probably also why France is so high as well.

Tourism is probably the answer. I know in the U.S., the highest per capita alcohol consumption is in places that have very high ratios of tourists to residents, such as Nevada and Washington D.C.

Of course, in Washington, it could be because of all the alcoholic pedophiles in congress.

There is no bubble on this forum, as far as I know, so there´s noone who can tell it like it this, but tourism sounds like a probable answer when it comes to Greece.

The French, though, enjoy their malts immensely and they have a population of about 60 million, to boot. I think their position might be warranted.
