I have a bottle of Watergate bourbon distilled by Meadow Springs distillery in Meadowlawn KY.

I cannot find anything on either the distillery or the town. Anyone out there in Bourbonia able

to shine any light on this? Bottle is dated 1969 - Obviously a play on the Watergate

scandal happening around then.

Meadow Springs at Meadowlawn, Ky. is simply another name for the Old Boone distillery in southwest Jefferson County. This distillery went out of business in the early 1970's.

The break-in at the Watergate Hotel didn't occur until June 17, 1972. "Watergate" wasn't a household word (like "Lewinsky") until the investigation got cranked up later that fall. If this product was bottled in 1969, the name must be a coincidence.

The town of Meadowlawn, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, (aka Meadow Lawn) is no more. Its name today is Valley Village. It is about 15 miles south of Louisville on the Ohio River. The name originated as the estate of Dr. Thomas Greenley, a renowned 19th century Kentucky physician. Meadow Springs in Meadowlawn/Valley Village should not be confused with the Meadowlawn Distillery which wasn't in Meadowlawn but in Anchorage, east of Louisville, where it was also known as the Grosscurth Distillery.

I don't know for sure, but Meadow Springs probably was a dba of the Old Boone Distillery (formerly known as the John P. Dant Distillery), which was in Meadowlawn. That distillery closed in 1977.

Now that I've seen the bottle, it appears to have been a conventional custom bottling job and most likely did predate the Watergate scandal.
