I recently pick up a bottle of the Old Charter Ten Year old. I bought it because I'm a big fan of BT products and because the price was good. $14.99 here in Chi-town. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Just looking for any info on it. What others think of the Old Charter line. I have seen the 13 year old in Binny's and they list the 8 year old on their website. Wondering if the 12 year is available here as well.

I would imagine the 12 is available to you. The 13 is the one that seems harder to find (impossible for me, despite the other three being widely sold). The 12 has a lot of fans here, including me, especially at its price. I haven't had the 8, and like the 10 fine, but at local prices, I can't resist the 12 if I want that style. They seem oddly close in price, at least to me; I'll usually see something like $14, $15, and $18 for the 8, 10, and 12. I think the 12 has that much more depth and character, and at those prices, haven't been tempted by the 8.

You would think that, but I am finding the opposite to be true here in IL. I can find the 10yo anywhere. And my normal Binny's location has a good supply of the 13yo. At $34 a bottle I have yet to try it. I snagged the last bottle of the 8yo from another Binny's, I wouldn't have grabed it unless it was the last one. I haven't found the 12 yo anywhere in Chicago. If anyone knows of a Chicago location to pick it up that would be helpful.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they discontinued the 12-yr old.

If they did that might explain why I can find it anywhere. There has to be some bottles stashed somewhere.

I seem to have gotten that idea about the 10, but hadn't heard anything about the 12. Neither seems to be hitting shelves in new bottles around here, though.

According to my records, I most recently purchased a bottle of Old Charter 12 on August 25, 2006, at Liquor Barn in Louisville, for $15.49.

Naturally I have a record of that. Doesn't everyone?

I know that Party Source in Bellview, KY regularly carries Old Charter 12. I bought a bottle during a visit in April and it even had a fely bag withit!

Our last distribution of Old Charter 12 yo carries the new-style, yellow label, too, now. It seems unlikely they would have bothered to get the new label approved for it just to discontinue it.

Tim,

Did you notice if there is a new label 10 yr. old? Just curious. Like I said, for the money, I go with the 12.

Yes, all three standard bourbons -- 8-, 10-, and 12-yo -- have the new yellow label, with the age stated on a separate strip label above it. See here:

http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4404&highlight=Old+Charter+label

(The 750ml and up have a rear label that includes the bar code, etc., show on front here.)

The color inside the little "Since 1874" badge varies by age, too.

The only recent issue I've yet to see in the new dress is the 7yo BIB.

Thanks. I'll look for the new label. I've noticed a few stores weren't restocking. Just waiting for the new labels to catch up, I hope.

I just went hunting Austin at a few places that I *know* used to have this. None of them stock it anymore. 8 was everywhere, and 10 and 13 were less common but I located them both.

Shame, because I remember seeing the 12 at these stores about a year ago and didn't pull the trigger because I was saving for Christmas :(

Being in Tennessee you would have seen our test market of the revised Old Charter label. This was my last project as domestic bourbon brand manager and I thought the label looked pretty good (if I say so myself). The 12 year old has NOT been discontinued, however, like all bourbons from Buffalo Trace, this one is currently being allocated. Since Tennessee is a very good market for Old Charter, it should not be difficult to find any of the Charter expressions.

Hi Ken,

Always a pleasure to see one of your posts! Do you have a new job title? A promotion? If so, congratulations!
