So what is everyone's thoughts on this line of bourbon? Murray's 2006 Whiskey Bible doesn't contain any reviews for any of them (anyone know why?) and I cannot find any online reviews from credible sources, i.e. whiskymag.com.

They're too expensive for me right now, but expect my curiosity will get the best of me at some point in the not so distant future. Are they worth trying or simply overpriced because of their age?

Are there any I should particularly avoid or seek out?

Cheers!

I, personally, feel like that whiskey bible was a waste of money. I really wish I would have gotten a chance to look at one before I bought it...:hot: :smiley_acbt:

BMH is a nice line of bourbon. I am quite fond of a few of them, and do not consider them to be too terribly expensive. If you are really lucky, you might find a bottle that was bottled in Lawrenceburg. Those bottlings were done by Julian (Van Winkle), and are supposed to be something exceptional.

If they were done by Julian, are the contents SW bourbon??

I have 3 of these, the 11, 16 and 21 year olds.

I drank the 11yo and 16yo about 12 to 15 months ago, I don't remember exactly how they were, but I do remember thinking that these were two of the best bourbons that I have ever had. I would say in my mid to low top ten.

All 3 were bottled in Bardstown, so if I am understanding this correctly there are some that were bottled in Lawrenceburg, under the consulting of J. Van Winkle?

Also who is this sole agent, CVI Brands of San Carlos, CA.?

CVI is the brand owner. The Kulsveens -- Kentucky Bourbon Distillers in Bardstown -- bottle it for them. I'm reasonably sure CVI selects its barrels from KBD stocks, or Even and Drew do it for them.

I have had the 11 yr and the 14 yr. Both are some of my fav's. If you get a chance, I would suggest trying them.

I tried the 14 year old, Bardstown label, and I’m not really in a hurry to try any of the others. What ruined this one for me is the price I paid. While it is good bourbon I just don’t feel that it was worth $65. The cheapest I’ve seen this for is $50 and even at that price there are a lot of other bottles I would rather try, most of which cost less and some of which are even older. I’d try one of the others if I got a good deal on it though.

  • 2 months later...

I just snagged a BMH 18 years old rye, the CVI Brands bottling of some years ago, so there are not many around any longer.

This was a fine rye whiskey. The nose and taste remind me of the first bottlings of ORVW 13 year old rye. There are probably common elements to both whiskeys. This would not be true necessarily for ORVW 13 year old after it changed to a vatting (I think a Cream of Kentucky rye was added to the first whiskey (Medley's?) used).

This BMH has a scent of old roses/old books, the mint and spice of younger rye become something different after 12 years of age or so. It reminds me constantly too of early and mid-20th century ryes and some bourbons tasted at Gazebos.

My 2 cents. I havent had a BMH product I didnt like.

I have. The new bottling of the "small batch bourbon" with no age statement is completely unappealing to me. This is a big disappointment, because I've loved their bourbons in the past

I've only had the 11 and 14 year olds. I LOVE the 11yo. The 14yo is good also, but it had a strange aftertaste to it. I sampled it with Stoopsie and he and I both noticed it and decided "taste bump" was a good description. I have not experienced this with any other bourbons or ryes I've tried.

Thanks for that Jay. Don't remember exactly what the heck I thought they were saying in the last two lines , but it certainly wasn't that. Great 60s cut. Tom V

Is this no longer available? Although not a big Rye fan, I have seen a couple of bottles here and there in my travels. Perhaps a good idea to pick up 1 or 2(?). Advice welcome!

Also, same question on the 14yo bourbon......not any more?

Thanks,

Jake
