Elagabalus
What's the general consensus on this Bourbon? I am new to Bourbons but would you say the ORVW 10 is better than Maker's Mark? Also how is the ORVW 12yo special reserve? Thanks. Thanks YOU:bowdown:
BobA
One of the first things I ever learned from reading this board is that if it says "Van Winkle" on it, it's good. As to whether it's better than MM, only you can decide that. I'd guess most here would say "yes" (I definitely would), although MM certainly has it's supporters. But MM is so available in most markets, that I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to see what you think about the Van Winkle line.Have fun.Bob
cowdery
What you think is what's important. If you like wheated bourbon, comparisons to Maker's are valid, as are comparisons to any of the Old Fitzgerald and W. L. Weller expressions, and Rebel Yell, for that matter. Value is a consideration too.Maker's Mark is what it is and it is a great benchmark for comparing wheated bourbons. When you buy a Van Winkle what you really are buying is a reputation. That's true with every whiskey, of course, but Van Winkle is a small line and every bottling is selected by Julian and Preston Van Winkle. What you are buying is their judgment. They don't "make" it in the sense that they don't have a still, but they "make" it in terms of deciding what goes into a bottle with their name on it and that's what you're buying. You're trusting them to give you something great.
Elagabalus
Thanks for the speedy replies. I was wondering if anyone has dealt with www.thewhiskyexchange.com and know if they happen to ship to Canada? I emailed them a couple days ago. Still no replies. luv2hunt
My sister's brother in law lives near the whiskey exchange. He brought me a few bottles when he came to the wedding in September. I sent him in with a list of 4-5 items I was interested in and my experience is that they don't know their bourbon, so be very careful to specify exactly what you want. I did, and still got the wrong thing at an inflated price. A bit disappointing! Dawn
