TNbourbon
We don't do that here. Best estimate you're likely to find here is that you'll enjoy drinking it if it's an unspoiled bottle. Please understand, I'm not trying to be rude -- but we just don't buy/sell on this forum.http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/announcement.php?f=9&a=

TNbourbon
Again, we don't do that here. eBay's your best bet. It's worth whatever someone's willing to pay for it. Really. (You may well get offers from your post -- but management will be unhappy with you if you conduct 'business' on the site.)
cowdery
We try to cover this is the sticky and I just don't understand why people think we're holding out on them. Not everything in this world has a known "value." In the secondary market for anything, value is established when there are enough known transactions to say "x is worth y." That simply doesn't exist with American whiskey. The only way to determine the value is to test the water and, for that, eBay is pretty much the only game in town.Seriously, read the sticky. It's telling the truth.
Vange
Hmm, for someone who doesnt want to sell it, it got on ebay awfully quick!$500 start price.
Grain Brain
Well, I guess he's still technically not trying to 'sell' it, but is rather auctioning it. Still, funny. That sure is purty, though.
nor02lei
I know and understand the logic why it’s forbidden to sell or bay whiskey on this site. However considering the endless discussions of whiskey prices not only from stores and bars but also from Ebay I have a little hard to understand the scepticism when somebody is asking the value of an older bottle on this forum, even if the reason may be to sell it on Ebay. barturtle
We're not appraisers, we don't get paid to appraise whiskey and quite frankly get a little tired of people only joining to ask these questions, when they have no interest in bourbon other than how much they can get for a bottle they happen to have. These people come here asking us for free advice and have nothing to offer us in return, that makes them not members, but in fact they are users. They are using us for our knowledge.

It Comes In Original Green Leather Case With Two Matching Shot Glasses. Any Ideas Are Appreciated.Asking the value of of bottle is not forbidden here?...I don't think so.I've see that particular bottling go for over $1,000, one time. On the average that one will go for at least $100.00++++$200.00+++ on ebay. Depending who's lookin for it at that particular time  I am not a "apparisal" person but someone who likes messing in that stuff all the time   I hope this helps you  It's a really nice collector's item   Bettye Jo
doubleblank
Leif.....I'll answer from a personal perspective. I don't want a wave of new "members" who simply register here, ask how much something is worth, and disappear forever. These people have no real interest in bourbon. They want an appraisal of value on something they own with the intent to sell it here or on Ebay. And who here want's to waste their time reading new posts always asking the same question? I don't.The information they seek is already on the "net"....search Ebay....heck, even here at SB.Com we often discuss prices. With some work pricing info can be found. I support the board's current position regarding answering the "What is this old bottle of Rumplestuff worth?"Randy
cowdery
What gets me is that the expectation really is "just give me a number" and if you try to explain anything else, or give a number but try to qualify it, they get belligerent and act like you are jerking them around, and how can we not get a little irked when people come in here, register for the sole purpose of getting an appraisal, and act like we have some obligation to provide it promptly and cheerfully. I, along with many other people here, try to patiently answer the same questions over and over again. I'm sure some people do read the sticky notes and get the answers there, but some people don't and won't. I accept that. But when people get mad at you because you tell them the truth instead of what they want to hear, why bother?Bettye Jo's answer, for example, is honest and accurate. If you monitor these things, you can see a range from $100 to $1,000. That's the truth and it does tell a person that it's probably worth more than a pizza but less than a college education, which might be useful information if you have none going in.To expand on Randy's answer, whenever one of these questions is asked, you wait for the other shoe to drop. As soon as you venture a wild-ass guess at an value, the person starts trolling for buyers. We shouldn't be nasty. I've been the object of some vitriol on this site and it's unpleasant, to say the least, but in defense of we regular question-answerers, some impatience is understandable. LeifI agree with you on this. Most people here are pretty aware of what things are worth and ebay is the market for how these things are judged right now. As far as tons of people showing up only to get info and then leave, well I don't think we'd start to get that many people doing that. We pretty much know when someone's first post is about the worth of a bottle they get the cold shoulder. It doesn't happen that often now. People can still come here and gather tons of info about rare bourbon and use that knowledge to go out and scout out Stitzel Weller, Gold Foils, Harper, Hirsch, etc. and then buy them up and sell them. That's probably has more of an impact that telling someone that a VOF is worth $200-$400.There seems to be this disconnect about a bourbon market. Despite people not wanting bourbon to be worth something, it is and as things get older or rarer, they become more valuable. I think it's a legitimate topic to discuss but I'll leave that up to the site moderators. To me it would make more sense to just accept it than try to pretend that there is no such thing as a market for bourbon or that there is no way to price things. doubleblank
I think we all pretty much agree on this more than it may appear.I'm all for legitimate discussions about bourbon's worth, both absolutely and relatively. We do it all the time, particularly its relative worth among peers or other spirits.I'm all against the "insta quote" questions we get as they add nothing to this site. Pointing them to Ebay and giving them the "cold shoulder" if they persist is perfectly appropriate.Randy

jsgorman
While I can appreciate that there are folks that don't appreciate someone posting on the board just to find out values -- I find that too often one or more members seem to chase them off the board.I imagine that there are a number of people that google themselves onto this site after a loved one has past away and they've left a bottle or two of unopened bourbons. I find nothing wrong coming to this site to learn a bit about what they have -- which may or may not prompt them to go on eBay and sell it.And frankly, if someone that is more partial to vodka than whiskey happens to acquire a bottle of Very Very Old Fitzgerald, they are probably better of selling it to someone who can appreciate it than mix it with Coke... cowdery
Hold on a minute. Go back and read the thread. Michaeline wasn't given "the cold shoulder." We gave the best answers we know and we talked about the very real difficulties of answering these questions to the satisfaction of these first-time-posters, who come in asking for financial advice with their first post, who don't read the sticky notes, and then get ticked (or maudlin) when they don't get the answers they want."When in Rome" has always been a good rule. When you go into a new community, it's on you to learn that community's norms and practices, and try to follow them as much as possible. If you disdain them, you do so at your peril. But if you (by which I mean anyone) make a good faith effort to do that, virtually everyone here will meet you at least half way. If anyone has gotten a "cold shoulder" it has been us, because instead of listening to the answers of the people who were solicited because of their expertise, maybe asking follow-ups or engaging in a real dialogue, we got attitude and, finally, a heavy-handed guilt trip. I didn't say it before, but now I'm fed up. Begone and git thee to eBay. Oh, wait, you're already there.
nickynick
Maybe That Is The Reason Why New Members Don't Return. I'm pretty new and I come here everyday. I think the idea is to be respectful of the others who use this site to share their love of bourbon. Everyone here has been nothing but helpful, respectful, and friendly to me. I think all they ask is the same in return.
bourbonv
I have to wonder if this guy realises that most of the people who buy old bourbon are members here. His attitude may cut down the interest in the auction for the bottle. Being a little more polite may have helped his sale.Mike Veach

I can't however understand how this person can feel slighted and retalitory to SB.commers. Taking some time to research his particular bourbon would have been a little less controversial. I have found that everyone on this site is willing to share an opinion and be of assistance to almost any rookie question posted. This particular person seems very upset at his own lack of patience. Also, being forthcomming in advance of soliciting advice my be prudent next time. My condolences to the family and good luck on your sale.
