OscarV Posted June 11, 2007 Share Posted June 11, 2007 I just opened my Prichard's Doubled Barreled Bourbon.From what I have read about this bourbon I was expecting something very bland.I am drinking it neat and it goes down very smooth, (yes, I did use the meaningless "S" word).But it is not complex at all, nice vanilla is about it, and a short finish that leaves a nice little burn.They say this was distilled in KY.Then Prichard poured it out of the barrels cut it with water and then re-barreled it. That took place at their rum distillery in Kelso TN.It is 90 proof and 9 years old.I am going to try it on the rocks, actually with a lot of crushed ice, I have a feeling it will make a nice Bourbon Mist. ILLfarmboy Posted June 12, 2007 Share Posted June 12, 2007 I had planed on having some ORVW 107 but I'm drinking half and half instead. Not half bourbon half scotch but half cream and half milk. I was welding and cutting a lot of galvanized angle and plate today. I have a bit of "galvanized poisoning". Any welders out there would know what I am talking about. sucks! T47 Posted June 12, 2007 Share Posted June 12, 2007 I am enjoying a first pour of Bernheim Original. When I picked it up at the liquor store the clerk said, "I can only say that I do not enjoy most American Whiskey's, this one is the exception. It does not burn like Bourbon". I pick up very slight notes of candied fruit in the nose. The Palate is smooth. Its flavor is pleasant, but not as deep or complex as Bourbon. I don't think this strikes me as smoother than Makers or one of the Weller’s. It still has a little heat. It has a slightly spicy finish like cinnamon honey has just crossed my tongue. If I see the same cleak again I will have to suggest some different Bourbons to him. It will be an interesting bottle to share with friends, to have along side wheated bourbon and then a rye packed one. I stopped at the store on the way home for a six pack of schweppes tonic water and a couple of limes. TNbourbon Posted June 13, 2007 Share Posted June 13, 2007 I noted during a Canadian tasting last night that the Forty Creek Three Grain -- also a copper-pot-stilled whisky -- had similarities to the awful Woodford Reserve Four Grain, though in more palatable form, so I began tonight by vatting them 1:1, just as a curiosity. While the blend was better than the latter alone, it was still very copper-centric. So, I poured some ginger ale over it and splashed a bit of PAMA liqueur and agave syrup (not tequila, but a non-alcoholic syrup from Mexico) into it. Wow, this is good. The vegetal and fruity flavors of the PAMA and agave make the copper disappear. I still get a good bit of the wheat, a la Bernheim Original, and also some rye spice, but now all in better balance.I'll call it the North American! Used to be one of my favorites.Next a tiny pour of Nikka "Yoichi" 10 yr from a 180ml bottle my friend brought me from Japan. Good balance but still wasn't what I was wanting that night.Saz 18 finished things off nicely. Something about premium rye and bourbons just does it for me.
