I'm enjoying a glass of Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye (VWFRR), to be followed by some BMH 18 year rye. Out of all of the Van Winkle products that I have tried (ORVW 10 107 proof, Lot B, Pappy 15, Pappy 20 & VWFRR), the VWFRR is my favorite. I just love it

Last night, I was in a Scotch mood, so I first had a pour of Glenlivet 12. I'd call this a good "baseline" SMS - very well made, but not a standout, sort of the Maker's Mark of single malts. :) (And like MM, Glenlivet 12 is available just about anywhere.)

Then, I had a pour of Compass Box Eleuthera. John Glaser really knows what he's doing... this is a great mix of Islay smokiness and rich Highland sweetness.

Tonight? I'm going way off the whiskey track, so I'll be discussing it in the Non-Whiskey section... but I'll probably have a nightcap of Bernheim Straight Wheat when it's time to finish.

An absolutely glorious summer afternoon: crystal-clear blue skies and a fantastic cooling breeze. The perfect accompaniment? OGD 114 with a couple of ice cubes (cause it's summer). What a wondefully honest pour; hot , spicy rye with a touch of rich sweetness!

Nothing tonight but last night was a bourbon/rye bonanza. Attended a tasting and had the following:

Old Fitz BIB's, different decades from 1968 through 2002

Lot B

ORVW 15

PVW 20

PVW 23

1933 ORVW

Hirsch Blue Wax

Very Very Old Fitzgerald

Mt. Vernon Straight Rye

All I can say is Wow! Fantastic pours. In fact, the Hirsch Blue Wax restored my low opinion of the Hirsch 16 year old. I have the Gold Foil and am not fond of it but the Blue Wax was great! Thanks Howie for a great evening.

It is an unusually cool (and muggy) evening in Dallas. We've been hammered by rain for the last 10 weeks. I thought I would try some Wild Turkey Rye that I bought several months ago. This is my first taste of the stuff. This is really good. Dry and slightly smokey. Some warm tingling to the tongue. Spicy. A long finish with cinnamon and then butterscotch. I will be buying more bottles of this. I think I will have some on the 4th of July.

First, a Negroni, then a Rittenhouse BIB Red Hook, and then I poured the last of my Four Roses Single Barrel... I have just a few sips left.

Well, it was just awesome that Howie was gracious enough to share such a rare treat. I won't take Howie's thunder regarding the details of the bottle but will say that it was good and had an interesting characteristic about it that Howie can explain. Once he posts the pics on the event, I'll elaborate more on the varying pours....

Now that I've finished off the FRSB, I had a pour of Pappy 15, and then a VWFRR to follow. Life is good...

JB Rye. Yeah I know, I'm a sick puppy. I just wanted to try it. Wild Turkey Rye next time.

Tonight, while I was making supper for my family, I had a Henry McKenna 10-yr BIB single barrel (whew!) in a tall glass with ice cubes and Perrier. It was very nice on a hot summer afternoon.

I'm starting out with AAA 10 year, and not sure what I'll have next. Possible candidates: Weller 107, Fall '05 Stagg, or '06 Stagg.

I started with the Rittenhouse BIB but as I walked past the bottles a little later I decided to have some of an old Old Fitz BIB I had open. The rye must be influencing the taste, this bottle has always tasted a bit musty to me but now it tastes alot more musty than I remember. Still decent but the nice flavor I remember is now heavily obscured.

Old Grand-Dad 114 Lot No. 1.

This is the perfect bourbon for today, it is like exploding fireworks in my mouth.

Very Old Barton, 6 yr, 86 pf from LeNell's.

This isn't a well-developed set of tasting notes, but rather some quick first impressions:

Taste: Wood, light leather, menthol — unexpected for a 6 y/o bourbon

Mouthfeel: medium, lightly numbs the lips

Finish: Smoke, mint and menthol

Overall: Not my favorite, but an interesting change of pace. Unique flavor profile.

Mark, check out when you can the 100 proof. The make-up of each (80,86, 90, 100 assuming the latter two are still made) is not necessarily identical, e.g., the 100 contains older whiskey than the others or some of them (I was told this by someone close to the distillery). The 90 is usually fine and the others can be too if their balance is right, each bottle is slightly different.

I began tonight with a Red Hook (Rittenhouse BIB), and then a Negroni. Now, I've just finished slowly savoring some Pappy 15. I'm definitely noticing some of the "cherry" effect that has been noted with the 20 (which I have yet to try).
