There's about a thumb's worth in my next-to-last bottle of UD-distilled Old Granddad 86; it's making a fine, almost grapey-tasting pour as I administer last rites to this soldier.

WT RR101, again. What a wonderful nose! In the past month or so I have drained about 3/4 of this bottle.

Toasted long distance with relatives back east. lost a cousin my age to ALS. His favorite pour was Jack Black, we raised a few and swapped stories for a bit. I am greatful that he is no longer suffering and for a life that helped define my youth.

It was a rather dry week for me so I had a little catching up to do yesterday. Started off with a Rittenhouse and Ginger; finally opened my Four Roses Single Barrel in recognition of BOTM; moved on to an early 80's Cabin Still (S-W); finished off the evening with my pipe and an '82 bottling of Old Fitz BIB.

Rebel Yell sucks. The other two, good.

And always the mysteries of labeling. Rebel Yell is produced by Luxco, a St. Louis rectifier and bottler, but the label says Louisville. It's not a dusty either. I got it at Liquor Barn (not known for its dusties) and the bottle indicates a 2006 filling.

Rebel Yell was created by Stitzel-Weller at the behest of Alex Farnsley, one of the company's owners, originally as a novelty gift to be used by Farnsley's nephew, Charlie, a local (Louisville) politician. It was such a hit as a novelty that the company began to sell it, but only in the Confederate states. Even though it was wheated bourbon it was generally sold young and intended to have a bit of a "bite" or "kick," as befit its name.

It was pretty good back during the "glut" era, when just about everything on the market was much older than its label age. It was never bad because SW just didn't make bad whiskey, although it was, like Cabin Still, one of their "bottom shelf" brands.

In the early 1990s, United Distillers and Vintners (i.e., Guinness, predecessor to Diageo) decided that George Dickel and Rebel Yell were its two American whiskey brands that had the most international potential. They started to distribute and promote it in Great Britain and elsewhere, but it didn't catch on.

In 1999, when Diageo did its big exit from the American whiskey business, Rebel Yell was sold to David Sherman Corp., since renamed Luxco.

The Rebel Yell web site has an account of the brand's history that is mostly true. It also says this: "Rebel Yell Bourbon is distilled at Bernhiem Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky."

It's pretty cheap. I paid $10.79 for it, but on the same visit I got a bottle of JTS Brown BIB (which is definitely Heaven Hill whiskey) for $8.69 and it's much better.

A killer Manhattan with my newly acquired Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Bitters. A stronger clove flavor than Angostura, and a killer aroma. Very nice Manhattan.

My daughter graduated from high school this past Saturday, so we opened a Van Blankle as part of the celebration. I'm finishing it tonight. SW whiskey at its "refined" finest. I told her I'm opening a bottle at college graduation in four years, so get to studying! LOL!

Manhattan's Rittenhouse BIB, The Noilly Prat at 4 to 1 with just 3 dashes of blood orange bitters. Added just a splash of water as I batched a small pitcher up. I was told that it helps blending the flavors. It did no harm.

Redstone Meadery Traditional mountain Honey Wine. Not as complex or as good as a nice Cab but pleasant and refreshing after a hard day's work.

Today was a tough one at work. I think I'll start off with a pour of Eagle Rare from the Martin's Wine Cellar staff-selected barrel (thanks to my special connection in New Orleans - GO SAINTS!!). After that, who knows?

This morning (doing an overnight shift tonight) I tried a Gary Gillman vatting (7 whiskies, 3 of them ryes) and Very Old Barton 6yr old. The I'm a big fan of Gary's vattings having tied some before. This one was not my cuppa being on the sweet side, but the rye bit was there nonetheless.

The Barton reminded me a lot of Rowan's Creek. Orange blossoms with a "punchy" middle, and a little on the dry side. I found it balanced, and characterful. For the price it seems to go for, I'm, impressed! But I wouldn't consider this a contemplation libation.
