I'm starting out with some Forty Creek Barrel Select (Canadian), and will open up my bottle of AAA 10 year to close out the night.

OGD BIB - this could easily be my daily pour. However, I'm not sure about the date so I'd have to buy a current bottle to make sure.

Oscar - if this is your first taste of ETL I would recommend trying a different bottle of (ie. Binny's version). The last thing I would call ETL is thin based upon my experience with the few bottles I have consumed that were purchased at Hi Times, Beverages & More and Binny's.

I am not saying it is bad, but I was a bit suprised at it's lack of depth.

I am having it on the rocks now and I like it alot.

But with Mr. Lee putting his name on it I was expecting someting more complex, I wish they would have at least bottled it at 100 proof.

Are the special retailer's bottles at a higher proof and/or unfiltered?

And how would you compare it to Ancient Ancient Age 10 year old? I find it similar.

I've grown very fond of Forty Creek. It's become my favorite non-bourbon pour.

Forty Creek? I'd like to see some tasting notes. I'm always interested in something new, but I tend to stay away from Canadian whiskeys. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Tonight: Heaven Hill 1989, 80 pf. I'd drink a higher proof if I had it, but the 80 is very, very nice.

Tom Moore BIB, c. 1981. Butterscotch and pepper abound. Delicious.

ND OGD 114, c. 198?. Dark and dried fruit, pie spice, and a leathery backbone mingle in what has to be the best thing to ever come from Kentucky.

Is it a problem that I only have one Bourbon bottle open (out of 11 total) that's current-production whiskey? I didn't think so...

Well, I was drinking some Weller 107 last night until a fly decided to jump in and do the backstroke. Arrgh.:hot:

All flies want to die that way.

Joe

Hey... now that sounds like the way to go!

Yep, that's it for me... I wanna go out doing the backstroke in a giant glass of Weller 107!

Heh. Reminds me of the time we visited the BT distillery. They were bottling Blantons and had the proofing tank (if that's what it's called) full. It's basically a hot tub sized vat of bourbon warmed to or over 80 degrees F (I don't recall the exact temp).

I stuck my head in there and breathed deeply. OMG, I was transported into the heavens. My brother had to pull me out before I jumped, er, fell in. What a way to go that would be! That's a fly with good taste, even if it doesn't taste good.

Hmm, you know, flies don't drink that much. And second, the alcohol would kill any uncleaness the fly may have left behind. I wonder about your commitment to fine bourbon if you let a little fly stop you. I may have to revoke your bourbon-man license.

What's the consensus? Should a fly stop you from drinking bourbon, or are real bourbon-men not so easily distracted and discouraged?

Bourbon and protein....how can you go wrong?

And oh....brother? :stickpoke:...this is for you.

I had a Red Hook with Rittenhouse BIB, then a limoncello (that bottle's going quick!), then an AAA 10yo, and finally a WT Rye for a nightcap. No two were anything near alike, but all were good drinkin'...

Speaking of flies. We get these nasty little fruit flies down here in TX. They always seem to wind up in my whiskey. I tried to set out "traps" of whiskey using some of the cheaper brands in my stash. (Benchmark, EWBL, HH 80proof.) Funny thing is, they would always hold out for the like's of Blanton's, Buffalo Trace, or OW 107. Bastards! Anyway, began with EC 12 yo. (Jeez, I just can't find anything better for 20 bucks!) Now it's Old Fitzgerald BIB. I'm.... gonna go with the... Elijah Craig! Thank you, thank you, thank you Heaven Hill! G'night!

Had the last pour from my I W Harper gold medal last night. Sorry it is gone as it will be hard to replace, but looking forward to opening some of my better bottles.

Last night I broke down and opened my big 1.75L Old Fitz Prime 80 proof. It was bottled in '92 so its SW. To me, this is a lighter, less complex version of the Old Fitz BIB (SW). There was definite char on the nose and palate and "toffee nut" from middle to back. I love the Old Fitz BIB at 100 proof and to me, this is a lighter version of the 100 proof. I'm tend not to gravitate towards 80 proof versions of anything but I've found there are a couple of older bourbons at 80 proof that are actually very fine pours. Most recent, and early 80's Old Crow and I.W. Harper. Both very flavorful and tasty. While I liked the Prime 80, I think I have to continue to try it over a number of weeks to form an opinion on whether this will become a long term member of my bunker.

I agree. I normally lean towards the big, older bourbons. But because of some dusty finds, like Greg I find myself in the possession of a few, older 80 proofs.

The Old Crow was amazing (thanks bro!), and I've been enjoying an old Heaven Hill 80 proof immensely. That's not to say I would turn down an 86 proof or BIB, but some of those older 80s a nice change with their own kind of charm.

First a small pour of WT 12 split label, now a bit of OGD 114. And then ?

I'm doing a side by side of two SW products. Old Fitz Prime 80 and an Old Fitz BIB. My initial impression is that the BIB is the bigger, stronger brother of the Prime 80....no surprise. Both have the same nose and palate, the 80 simply being a watered down version of the BIB. Anyone else???

If these kids ever get to bed, I shall pour myself some of the WT Kentucky Spirit. Maybe follow it up and contrast it with a pour of Thomas Handy Rye.

FR SmB... with all the open bottles on my bar this is one I find myself frequently coming back to.
