J.T.S. Brown (Hustler)

First, I'm new to this forum. There are so many good Bourbons and so little time.

I don't think there's a Bourbon fan alive who hasn't seen The Hustler at least 5 times (J.T.S. Brown, no ice, no glass). And I'm a huge fan of the movie. But I have my own theory why Fats, when ordering White Tavern Whiskey during the first big match, said to Preacher, "Get it at Johnny's." That was his way of signaling to Preacher to alert Bert Gordon that a big game was going on and to get in the action. Others have commented that Fats was drinking a non-alcoholic beverage during the game, which explains why he won and why he didn't look tired after 40 hours of play. But if that were the case, then why later did Bert Gordon tell Eddy, "He drank just as much whiskey as you." This, after Eddy used his drinking as an excuse for losing that match.

Maybe the world will never know the answer. Maybe it's better we don't. I have just one last thing to say, "Just tell me where I can find him, friend."

I picked up a bottle of JTS Brown BIB at Liquor Barn in Louisville last month, for a mere $8.99. I was expecting a fairly undistinguished example of HH whiskey at 4-years-and-a-day and was pleasantly surprised. This is a very tasty, very well balanced bourbon; a treat and a tremendous bargain.

As for The Hustler, I subscribe to the theory that the viewer is supposed to at least suspect Fats is drinking a placebo.

On the other side, Sarah, Eddy's bizarre girlfriend, didn't care what she drank. But for most of the movie it looked like she drank Scotch. Notice that Eddy didn't drink during the last match with Fats, which Eddy won. Oh, and Bert Gordon, Eddy's manager, tried J.T.S. Brown at least once when he was in the bar planning Eddy's match with Finley, the Kentucky gentleman gambler. Note that Finley, after losing to Eddy, poured himself a glass of wine or champaigne to drown his sorrows. (I told you I've seen this movie more than 5 times!)
