What would you buy?

If you were in Kentucky at the moment, what would you buy? (This could extend to products available elsewhere). Here is my current list, in fact it is in my wallet for my next trip to Louisville and Bardstown (not sure when that will be, but maybe sometime later in June):

- 1792

- 'garnet red" EC 12

- 375 ml Weller 107 proof with bar code on front

- VG 90 (The Fox)

- Rare Breed

- Four Roses

- Tom Moore BIB

- ORVW 12 years old (or the 10).

That's easy (sort of).... I'm limited to 6 x 700ml bottles that I can bring back into Australia without paying tax (that's 3 bottles per person - 3 for me and 3 for my wife)

Next year I hope to get -

1x Pappy 23

1x Pappy 20

1x Bernheim Wheat Whiskey

and 3 more bottles of anything else that I find I like (and isn't available in Australia)

The garnet red EC 12 is my own, unofficial designation for an EC 12 I tasted recently from current stocks whose colour seemed unsually reddish and whose taste was the best I've ever had in that brand (and amongst the best bourbon I've ever had, period). I am looking for similar on my next forays.

I would go for any bonded products, esp. those not normally seen outside of KY. VOB BIB comes immediately to mind, though I know you've mentioned not particularly loving Barton whiskey.

Also, I'd likely try to pick up AAA 10yo.

Good list of bourbons Gary. You might have some difficulty finding the 90 proof VG in KY. I have never seen this anywhere, which is a shame because I really like this bourbon. Have you seen it on a shelf here?

Sounds extremely interesting! I'm a fan of Elijah Craig 12 and 18. I'll have to keep a sharp eye out for this one.

Jeff, I am almost positive (I would be 100% positive, but burned some grey cells at the Sampler ) I saw at least 1 bottle at the North location of Chuck's in Bowling Green last week.

Hi Jeff, I'm almost sure I saw it at Liquor Barn recently. I did see the white label 80 but unless memory is playing tricks I thought I saw its bigger brother too. (Could it have been at Toddy's? I know I saw it on my recent trip).

This list of bourbons by the way reflects not an ultimate list, but just what I want to buy next.

Interesting question Gary, because I find myself deciding what I want from the list of what is available here in Ohio. While we are getting better, there are still holes. BUT - the choices are good enough that I'm happy. I can find WT Rye, KS and RB. All of the Beam SB collection. Blantons. Even saw Buffalo Trace the other day. Several others that escape memory.

Your question hinges more on 'what do I want I can't find here..... I guess the three I've heard good things about but not found are AA 10 yr, Old Forester 100 and Four Roses....

Ken, thanks, exactly, I meant, what do I want to buy next that I can't obtain locally. Since Kentucky is a locus of bourbon production and availability, I key what I want by that market (admitting not every brand may be available there every time, e.g., maybe I saw the Fox in Chicago, not Kentucky recently!).

I was in Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago and had an (unexpected) quick trip to Cinci. I ended up staying the night in Covington, KY.

I ended up picking up a couple of KY-only bottles: VOB BIB; Old HH Very Rare Old 10 Year Old (can I abbreviate that: OHHVRO10? :grin: ); and Rock Hill Farms SB.

I hadn't had a chance to try any of these yet (and still haven't opened them).

Pert near ever time I git to Kentuck, I pick me up soma that there AAA 10 yr, Very Rare Old Heaven Hill 10 yr, and Four Roses Single Barrel and Small Batch. Seein' that bout ever week or so, somebody from SB.com moves there, I just might be fixin' to move thar myself!!

Some other Heaven Hill BIB.

Pretty much my default selection, except I'd throw in a OF 100 and alternately, something from Van Winkle. I've been impressed by the recent (non-SW) 10 and 12 year old bourbons.

I would recommend any of the Four Roses, Very Rare Old Heaven Hill BIB, and any others not available in my own area. For the record, I did see some VG 90 at more than one store in Kentucky last month!

Another vote for VROHH. I think I was one of the first to rave about this as being the much cheaper, but equal to it's pricier brother, EWSB. Hopefully my mom will bring me a case this weekend. It really is that good.

Get the 1792 for the decanter, but you won't really care for the whiskey. Get a 1.75L of VOB90, or BIB to refill it with, as either is a more robust, and complex taste than the watered down 1792 (which is a Barton BTW).

Glad to read your opinion which is exactly opposite from mine. Did you ever have it at barrel proof? Good stuff IMO.

Never had the pleasure of ANY barrel proof Barton, but I would love to try it! However we seem to be speaking the same if you think the barrel proof is better, and I recommended the 90 or 100 proof Bartons for the same reasons. 1792 is 94 proof, but seems weaker to me than the regular Barton. maybe it is the higher price that has me expecting more, but I personally don't like to pay a premium for an average whiskey. I'm not being critical of anyone's tastes, just stating that if you are expecting a premium taste, I think most folks would be disappointed. I also think that there are no bad bourbons, just some are better than others.

Ridgemont Reserve 1792 is a different mash bill than VOB, 10H and Barton's other bourbons. It contains a higher percentage of malt.
