I’m trying not to go overboard and spend a bunch of money (at once) on bourbon. I thought I would build my bunker up slowly. I just bought a bottle of Wild Turkey RB yesterday so I could bunker it for a “special†occasion. I told myself I would not open the bottle till then. Well, as I type this post I keep glancing at the bottle of RB. The heavenly nectar in the bottle is calling out to me. I’m starting to feel sad because I know I’m not going to have the discipline to resist for more then a few days. I’m just starting out on my endeavor to collect bourbon, so the new purchase is part of the beginning foundations of my bunker and the Turkey is already in danger of being gobbled!!!

I’ve been drinking bourbon for many years, but the concept of stashing bottles away for a long time is a little alien to me. It seems like “alcohol abuse†to leave a bottle unopened for a long time. :grin:

Sorry, but you will go overboard. I never thought I would fall so fast and so far in purchasing bourbon....I'm really quite disgusted with myself.

It's a nasty habit that's almost impossible to break. I have tried, very unsuccessfully, to minimize my bourbon purchases and that lasted for about 2 weeks. In the last week I scored 4 bottles of '06 Stagg, and the bottles listed under my thread in the collectables forum (and the pictures don't actually show all that was purchased).

I look at it this way, this site and those on it have opened up a world of bourbon I didn't know existed. Variety. For years, I only drank Wild Turkey....I didn't know any better, I was ignorant. Now I'm somewhat educated about bourbon and buy pretty much all I can get my hands on; but it's focused on specific items. Bunkering gives me the ability to enjoy various bourbons long after they are out of distribution and have special bottles for special occasions.

I'm not a heavy drinker but now I enjoy some of the best bourbons in the world and will do so for many years to come.

I think that the current Rare Breed, the 03-RB, is the best of the ...um, breed.

I've been dreading when it goes dry and another batch replaces it, because I need to bunker up several and I've been putting off laying out that cash for years now.

I recommend to you to drink it now, as it's obviously calling to you. But do replace it before the days of the 03-RB go away.

My theory is: If Prohibition ever comes back I'll have enough to last me till the day I die, or drink myself out of my misery if all else fails. Need more bottles!!!

If you're just a person who always wants to have a wide selection of good bourbon on hand, then just tell yourself it will all still be in the stores tomorrow, i.e., it will be there when the time comes to buy it. Relax.

On the other hand, if you are becoming one of those people who can't allow any store to have any bottle you don't have, then I'm sorry, but there is no hope for you.

My goal is to have a large enough amount of a wide selection of good bourbon on hand that if for some reason I could no longer buy any more, I would have an adequate amount (spaced properly) to last the rest of my life.

Maybe about 300 bottles of good stuff…that would be good for about 5 bottles a year for 60 years.

Damn Greg! Even after we cleared out that one store? I know the guy who went out and picked it up for us had trouble finding the exact store, were these 4 by any chance in the same store you told me about? Have to wonder if he found another store with 4 bottles...

No, it was a different store. Through a contact, I was able to query the ABC office and ask how many Stagg's were left in VA and where they were located. The answer I got back was 10 bottles left, 7 in Merrifield and 3 somewhere near Emporia. Well, I visited the Merrifield store since it's only about 4 miles from my work and they only had 4 left. The ones in Emporia will have to stay there until someone there in Southern VA picks them up.

I cracked... :grin: it’s open. I'm drinking the bottle of WTRB (WT-03RB). It's the second bottle that I've tried of the stuff. I'm VERY impressed with how smooth it is. I can't believe it's 108.2 proof. I know I've not tried a lot of the top shelf brands, but of the bourbons I’ve had...this is hands down the best!!! My #1 right now...nectar of the gods!
